focal versus audison? whos better?

well, got my 4.75 and my 165 k2p's into my truck last week. a little dissapointed at first, but now that the speakers are breaking in its staring to sound alot better. I still seem to have a "hole" in the high-mid to low-high range sound though (piano and other things in that range seem to dissapear and are not very audible). guess its time to take some reading and set up the eq correctly. I also dont have my sub in yet, but the lower end is still quite impressive.

how about the install? where do you have speakers installed? have you properly dampened your enclosures? do you have enough air space for your mids? Those K2s require a LOT of air space (think a door).

I'm sure that tuning will take care of quite a bit of this, but if the others aren't taken care of, no amount of tuning can make up for it.

I'd be interested to know how things turn out for you.

they're in the doors- mids are botom-front corner of the door (stock location) tweeters are in the top-front of doors(also stock location). the doors are solid, they have been coated with dynamat extreem (inside and out). the only thing I didn't do was put in a layer of foam.

I would bet that's part of the reason you are feeling the sound is a little flat.

Do everything you can to dampen the door, the door pannel as well as the inner and outter skins. If you can deaden that door and try and seal it as best as possible, you will see a much better response out of any speaker, not just the Focals, and not just with the Focal amps, that's the case across the board.

it's not just foam, you need to add some weight to the doors as well.

Dynamat or the equivilant.

Nonhardening modeling clay will work wonders too.

If you do use foam, it needs to be a closed cell foam.

Dynamat makes some.

If you're willing to go further, blackhole makes some stuff that's waterproof.

guess you missed something,
the doors are covered with dynamat extreme...both skins. if you pat onthe doors from outside, it sounds/feels like they're solid....filled with cement almost.......so should I add foam??

I'm sure they do feel like they are solid...to you...

how many layers of extreme are on each skin? have you taken an additional measures to seal off the door? how about seperate the front of the speaker from the back to eliminate back waves? Remember, you're essentailly trying to make the door act like an enclosure.

Seriously, I worked for a company who made hearing aid transducers and we used silly putty to quiet resonances on some manufacturing equipment. It worked like a charm.

I have just been reading this thread and am amazed!

Lets be open here so there is no hidden issues, I am the distributor of Audison, Hertz and Morel in Australia.

As far as Audison people hiding on sites I can guarantee you we dont, as far as the brand must be hurting -

Also I really doubt that the company who distribute audison is hurting.

I can assure you that it is selling better than ever especially in the USA with a string of awards including the CES 2005 2006 and now 2007!

Audison is a quality product that is manufactured in Italy by Elettromedia, the same company that produce Hertz.
For many years Audison was distributed by Focal in France and most of their demo cars used Audison, on the flip side Elettromedia distributed Focal and for many years the factory demo cars used Focal.

As far as specs go,

one thing's for sure, STEG rocks! even the QM's are rated higher (by numbers: THD, S/N ratio and all of that ****) than a desent audison

not all manufacturers are honest in their specs, you can make them read anything you want if you know how (after being in this industy over 3 decades I know what I am talking about). I am not hear to slam or defend any other brand, if you think Audison is not as good as XYZ that is your right to do so.

There are many decent brands on the market and it is your choice which you buy, but just think for a moment about something you dont know, many of the inovations in amplifiers today were developed by Audison a simple example is the variable input levels that you take for granted - You can thank Audison for those !
