no, you need the controller.
Hi. I was wondering about the main volume control when using the alpine H701. I have a computer with a soundblaster PCI card, using the Optical output to go to the H701 (i am just about ready to buy the H701). I won't be using a HU and I don't want the alpine controller. Will the volume on the PC work correctly throught the Optical output? I don't quite understand how the volume would change on a digital signal.
So, my main question is can I use the H701 with no controller, and rely on the volume in the PC even when using optical output.
Thanks!

you have to have either the controller, or a compatable head unit for control.. by itself the brain will do nothing...

I think we need a 701 FAQ....
