I have a 2006 Honda Civic sedan and was wondering where an after market cd player would be installed? Looking at the design it doesn't look like the cd player just pops right out. it looks like it would have to be cut out? Also do these after market cd players work with the volume control on the steering wheel. thanks
You do not have to cut it out. It can be replaced or changed with a few tools and a little patience, and the right Dash Installation Kit. This is a new model Civic, so I'm not sure if there is a Dash Kit available for it yet...see the links below.
If you're not a hands-on kind of guy, I would find a reputable high-end car stereo shop to see how much this would cost (just to do the labor of swapping out the deck) and to see what size units will fit and what Dash Kits are available. Some Best Buy stores can do this as well, but the quality of the work at these is hit or miss. Some installers are very experienced, and some are not. The best thing to do is to seek out private recommendations for the shops near you that can do this type of work. I would even say it's worth driving 100 miles to find a reputable shop. A lot of these cars have A/C controls and other functions that are tied into or "integrated" with the factory stereo units, and if not wired properly, other functions of the car may not work.
There are adapters that allow you to connect your factory stereo to aftermarket amplifiers, iPods/MP3 players, CD Changers, etc. What exactly do you want to do?
Several companies also make interfaces so that you can use the Steering Wheel controls with most aftermarket stereos.

1. aftermarket cds wont work with the steering control natively, you'd have to get seperate adapters for that
2. you'd probably have to cut into the console, unless there is an aftermarket replacement, which you'd have to look for yourself, i dont have a civic, and im lazy
