What subs would you go with for SQ?

Ok, lets say I'm looking for 2 10" subs. What would you recommend if I were trying to compete in SQ? What amp? I'm a car audio n00b, by any definition. I have 2 memphis 10" right now, and an audiobahn (chromed turd, woohoo!) 800w amp. I have a pioneer Premier deck, that's only about 3 months old. I love that deck.

Sealed boxes? I would assume so, as they don't fuzz the bass like a vented box.

Anyway, looking to replace the subs first, then I'll start looking into replacing the door panel and rear speakers.

Component speakers a must? If so, damn it all.

I've searched a bit on this, but I really want some real-life wisdom here. A been-there-done-that kind of story.

There are to many to list, I like Eclipse, ED, Diamond, etc. What budget are we talking?

Eh. Lets say entry level, low end pricing. What's the cheapest amount I could spend and still end up with some really nice sounding subs?

And ya know, I was thinking... is 10" the way to go? Or should I go something bigger/smaller? I have no clue about SQ. I can rhyme though.

try to find some place that has some image dynamic subs (namely IDQ, but even there entry level subs are nice). they are really reasonably priced and a hearty performer. Ed subs are great too. as far as size, generally smaller subs will be tighter but at the cost of spl. I recently purchased some of ED's eu-700's and though i haven't had a chance to audition them yet (still building my new system) the reviews about them have all been amazing.... oh and they are only 6.5"

Neato. Shall I be looking for them at the next SoCal meet then?

I'll def. check those out. Yeah, I'm not too big on SPL anymore. I was tryin there for a little while, but now I'm just tryin to find stuff that sounds amazing. My memphis are ok, they thump reasonably, and sound pretty good, but I know there's something better out there.

i've always liked 3 8" subs but it could be a lot about asthetics...i think they look cool! 10's a really safe route to take though.

as far as the next socal meet...i dont think i'll be there. too much work to do and not enough time...we'll see though.

For the price, the new Dayton HO & HF lines are very nice! $120/10" from PartsExpress. I haven't had the chance to hear one of the HF's yet, but the HO's are very nice! 2 10" HO's is what I have planned to run whenever I get closer to finishing the carputer.
Play with it, 'til it's broke.

My personal preference is 1 12" sealed. To me it is the best combination of SQ, SPL, and space requirements. I mean, hell, all you need is 1 cubic foot of trunk space and you have a good box usually. Matches my front stage pretty well too. I'm thinking of ditching my Eclipse SW9122 for an Adire Brahma sub. Don't expect much gain, I just have always wanted one. But for SQ, isn't the sub pretty much the least critical element?

Anyway, being Adire finally has product rolling out again, might consider looking into them. But you don't get any fancy looks with them, just a speaker. Here is a link to some product

Also, component speakers are pretty important. However, if mounting component speakers is a problem, you should know that it isn't unusual nowadays for component sets to come with a mounting bracket so that you can mount them as you do a coaxil speaker. Just look for that feature when shopping. Component speakers are just better generally (more power handling, better crossovers, more flexibility, basically just higher up models than most coaxil speakers).
