Have you connected a stereo source to see if the mic input is stereo? If it is, you can just turn the input sensitivity down.
would that sound quality be equiv to a dedicated AUX source?
Well, because it'd be passing through the mic pre-amp, even if you turned the input gain down...
No. You'd need a USB or PCMCIA solution.

where did you find that jack? local radio shack came up short (big surprise).
