Have you connected a stereo source to see if the mic input is stereo? If it is, you can just turn the input sensitivity down.
My laptop only has one MIC input, and no AUX line input. So, I'd like to know what options there are available besides a USB soundcard.
I'd like to get the Silverstone DAC or similar, but I need an AUX input.

would that sound quality be equiv to a dedicated AUX source?
Well, because it'd be passing through the mic pre-amp, even if you turned the input gain down...
No. You'd need a USB or PCMCIA solution.
If your motherboard or soundcard has an input for cdrom type audio connections you can wire up a headphone jack and use those as inputs. I currently use one for my XM radio due to my line in is used by my TV tuner and wanted to leave the MIC open for speech recognition.
