I just depends on how you want to power it. I would try to stay away from power invertors at all costs. It will save you many headaches. As of right now the largest DC-DC power supply is a 250W, however I have a feeling that there will be other options down the road. If they made a mini-itx board that can use the newest AMD processors, then I think someone will built a bigger PSU. You can always string together multiple PSU's to provide more 5V and 12V power.

Added: Here is some good reading. There is a section on PSU.

Ordered in two OPUS-250W, so I can gang them if required.

Still undecided on the CPU as yet.

Case, I might get a stock standard with the mini motherboard. I have access to a sheet metal facility. Mods\new one are not a major concern

I am stuck on the choice of hard drive..

    1\ 2.5 laptop type,
2\Solid state 8 gig with a read only style boot up and shutdown (40 MB transfer rate)
3\Gigabytes GC-ramdrive, with extended battery life (bigger battery) and second boot option from 2.5 laptop harddrive if the first drive (ramdrive) fails.

    Any advice appreciated

I'd read this thread regarding the solid state: Solid State Drives and Boot Times

I'm considering the solid state drive myself in this next implementation.

Have you found a card reader that's capable of doing 40MB transfer?

I am going to bite the bullet and get one of these that directly interfaces with the sata.

I guess I'm a bit confused...If you're going to go IDE, just get a compact flash card and an adapter...cheaper than paying $500+ for an IDE card like that...

as far as cooling your CPU goes..... zalman 7700ALCU.... one of the best silent coolers for now..... Well, there will be better, but they will be more expensive, or less silent, or freakin' huge, and the 7700 isn't exactly a small one already..... still figuring out where I'm gonna put my mobo because of the issue with the cooler (you might read that I have a zalman 7700ALCU).

finding somewhere to put that thing is nearly unrealistic in most CarPC installs....

only nearly... so it is still possible.... I might mount it vertically against one of the sidepannels of my trunk.... an other option is to fully use my trunk for the install of my car-pc/audio and mount a big box that's parted in 5 separate compartiments:

    sub
    sub
    amp
    amp
    pc
