Why do you require a ground from the head unit to the amplifiers?
Surely the amplifier ground will suffice.

The ground is your audio reference point, it uses this as a differential for your signal. If there is noise (20-20 KHz frequency) on the ground reference than your amplifier (in this case) will include this as part of the signal.

Your reason for noise is you have blown your ground traces in your head unit by short circuiting the signal to ground (you touched a live RCA centre pin to a ground). Now it gets its ground reference from the amplifier ground wire.

If you replace the ground traces with a wire, you may have "solved" the problem, but you open yourself so destroying the head unit op amps if you short the centre pin to ground. The ground traces are a FUSE.

Either learn from this and get them fixed properly ($$$$$) or use 1 amp fuse wire for the replacement.

Obviously I will recommend proper service.

So, that doesnt tell me how to fix it.

yes the trace is blown, a common Pioneer head unit problem.

its internal and I dont really want to fix that.

how can I externally solve this problem?

    Use fuse wire externally.

This goes against most of what I believe in car audio. If you can't figure this out, perhaps it is a good thing. I like to sleep at night.

Pay the money to someone who does know what they are doing.

id rather do it myself, or else I wont learn.

grounding the HU to the RCA outer shielding (from spot on HU to where and how?)

with a wire that has an inline fuse. (what kind of fuse, how do i determine its rating?)

you think i should spend, as you put it $$$$$, to get the, as google puts it "eyelash sized", Pioneer internal fuse fixed?

is there no safe, always works because this happens alot, way to do this?

Hi, sdashiki. I think I have the same problem as you with a Pioneer DEH-P80MP. The HU has already been to a repair under warranty. The IC protector had burned and the repair fixed the noise, but the problem started again after ~an hour. This time I want to repair it myself for two reasons: to save money, and like you said "id rather do it myself, or else I wont learn."
Tomorrow I will try to use fused jumper wires like suggested in this thread on diyaudio.com forum (see pics).
I will return and tell you if it worked out for me..

If you would like to try and fix the fuse inside the HU it will look like this

    my quick fix:

I just taped the hanging rear RCA output from the HU, to the metal block on the back of the HU. On my unit the rear RCA outputs are on a 5" extension, and the SUB/Front is a plug in the back of the HU. with the hanging rear RCA, i can move it to have the RCA outer shield touch the HUs back

    Metal to metal, noise stopped.

of course, not a very clean solution.

and from what ive read, without a fuse somewhere in this connection, its a bad thing.

why did he wire up both RCAs?

    Same Problem

I think I have the same issue as you, I just installed a new deh-p7800mp over the weekend and I get the same problem even when the car is off, it only gets worse when the car is running. Did you run the ground somewhere else when you tried this fix? I think I am going to give what you did a shot. Even taping to the back of the HU couldnt hurt that much if you think about it once you cram the wires back into the hole in your dash there are plenty of things they come in contact with if you dont tape them, especially with the extension they put on there.

So just to clarify what you did cuz we are having identical problems...

you took the RCA extension coming from the back of your pioneer deck and touched the outer sheilding of the RCA to the metal on the back of the HU and the problem went away?

I also wonder if just grounding the RCAS to another location instead of the deck chassis would work like a metal bolt somewhere? What do you think?

take like a foot of wire stripped at both ends.

pull out your head unit, leave all the wires connected, RCAs, power, grnd, all of em.

turn on your HU, key to the ACC position. youll hear your noise problems.

take the wire, there should be some sort of screw hole in the very back of the HU, shove one end of the wire into the screw hole.

now, you have your RCAs connected to the HU.

take the other end of the wire and touch it to anyone of your RCAs outer metal shield. if you have plastic shielding and not metal, pull the RCA out a bit to expose the outer shielding. (outer means NOT the inner pin, anything but)

take a look at the pic above, he did what im saying only he grounded both RCAs, im not sure why, one does the trick.

if the noise stops, your problem is the same as mine.

    internal ground fuse is blown.

Dude this worked like a freakin charm, you guys rock...I would have never found a solution to this (Other than sending to pioneer) if it wasnt for this post...Thanks a ton, I picked up some fuse wire at Radio Shack and sodered just like in the picture, NO noise at all...simple solution. Thanks dude.
