what do you mean by 6 speakers? you want components (midrange and tweeter) up front, coaxials in the rear and then a sub?
oh..mods please move this to car audio![]()
Hey all. Im new to all the car audio stuff but i have some basic pieces and i wish to understand them. I have a deck that is going to accept my computer's audio but i want to upgrade my 4 speakers to 6 speakers and a sub. How does a 6.1 ch amp work and how can i wire it by myself?

I have Two Sets of Alpine SPR-17LS 6 1/2" 6.5 Type R Component Speakers. I want to make it 3 sets and a alpine type S or if the amp is powerful, a type R sub. My deck is a piece of crap, that will be replaced with a better one.
wher are you going to be putting the 3 sets? do you realize that two point sources for the same frequencies will lead to some cancellation oddities?

The components for the front will fit in the stock locations, the rears fit on a adapter plate for 6x9's, and supposedly for the front center and rear center (this is where im lost to how they work or how they get hooked up in any way or form) will be placed in a custom mount for the front dash(still in design), and the rear on a custom metal mount in the rear.
ok...we still have a problem. going into your head unit you're only going to be able to accept a stereo input (unless it has digital input and your head unit is capable of 6.1? surround). you'll have to mix the left and right signals to get your center chan. you'll have to build a couple 'mixers' to get front center from the front left and right audio signals, and the same for the rears w/o damaging your headunit or amps. there are better ways of doing this, namely dumping the head unit, getting a pxa-h701, going digital out from your computer, dumping the rear center chan. and going 5.1

This sounds good as well. I primarily wanted it because it would make a neat sound in my car having full 6 speakers. But i understand this. Also this does not sound so bad, i looked into it and this unit has an optical input therefore i can hook up my computer with a SoundBalster NX Card to it right? Im still debating about the amplifier, because i was offered a brand new discontinued amp called a Pheonix Gold 5.1mt theater amp. This amp was a 100x6@4ohm amp witha a sub channel at 200x1@4ohm that sounded wonderful to me, but i guess it would have been complicated. It had an optical input and i thought that if i hooked up the Soundblaster NX to it and set it to 6.1 it would work out just fine. But i think im looking at a Audiobahn or Memphis Belle amp to do this project. What do you think about this basic summary?
i say go with the pg amp, better quality then the other too and you probably could go digital out from you mobo right ot the amp. if it doesn't work well then you can always upgrade to the alpine h701 and still use the same amp. i think i'd do a little more research on the amp and then jump on it. its a hard amp to find
