I have a huge laundry list of things to get done within the next two months. My car has to be show ready and I know RED is already in "show mode". It's still too cold around here for shows (although we have had 60 and 70s in chicago the past few days).
....I was goign to write guide on the KXproject too for another user .....QUOTE]

Oh god! yes please!

I'm still learning the KX driver and is it ever consuming!

Even a basic setup guide in layman's terms would be great for those just starting out.

Cheers

Why are you guys being so aggressive? I didn't say that I need you to figure it out in a month. I just said that I need to figure out what my summer project is going to be in a month so that I can start buying parts and equipment. Right now I am just reading up as much as I can on CarPC tuning and stuff, and PM to people with specific questions, by the way durwood do you care if I post our PM conversation on this forum so that people who are just starting to do the research have some more info to read?

PS: RedGTiVR6 please read

Yep I have no problem if you want to post it.

I forgot to tell you I am using the Audiotrak Prodigy 7.1 Hifi (Check out the reivew section). Awesome card for the money but little support. I already knew that when i bought it though. Ego Systems bought out Audiotrak and for some reason are pretty much killing off Audiotrak except in Europe/Asia. I think it's because they can't compete with Creative Labs in market share. There are a few other cards that seemed better in regards to specs but I didn't want to spend that much until I get it working...then I can upgrade later. I just liked this one because it doesn't resample to 48Khz, has replaceable opamps, and uses Directwire. Took me over a month to decide on the card.

I don't think anyone was really trying to be hostile, but its rough on both ends. We spent many hours figuring this stuff out and it's still not 100% yet. Back and forth between other forums, testing software, and then trying to pass the info along at the same time. Then newcomers come in (which is good) but they come in before it's finished and they weren't there the whole time so they don't really see that. Instead they see a really long thread, and don't take note of when it started. It's understandable. Like I said, I can help point people in the right direction so you can help figure stuff out, or you can wait....and then when someone has time, there may or may not be a guide. I really do want to pass the info along, I just have lots to do and so little time...

And yeah there's indeed a whole lot of info you have take in. I've been following the pc-tuning thread from the beginnening, and even for me, it came at a point where I couldn't keep up with how fast it was growing anymore.

So I'm searching on my own and hope everything turns out right (probably won't bother till next competing-season though, unless I can get it all fixed in a short matter of time and still jummp in on this season (started this month)
Xenia & Isabelle, totally in love!

I appreciate what you guys are doing and did for the last couple of month. And you'll prolly think I am lying but I did check the date when the software thread was started and it was one of the reasons why I created this thread, mostly because the topic that I read was from Dec 2006 and I just wanted to start the talk again and see where everyone is at on their projects. I am not trying to speed anything up. When I get a card (I just need to decide on what audio card to go with). I'll plug it into my PC and start working . I am really thankful to you all and especially durwood & RedGTiVR6 for all the posts and PM's that cleared up some of the questions I had.

hahaha there were times I had my own head spinning. I'm still trying to keep it all straight. The Audio over USB thread was just as bad. Still another thing that was put on the shelf for later. That was funny when I searched the web for that. I came up on multiple threads with the same idea but they just died suddenly with no resolution and sit dorment for years.

Actually Nickspy I guess its not a bad idea to check to see where everyone is at. If you hadn't been with it from the beginning it's hard to know where to start looking. I am still trying to catch up on frontend software mods.

Hi, while I was searching PCI Sound Cards I found your thread about your SQ mazda. I would like to know if you could answer a couple of my questions and clarify a couple of things I got confused on while doing my research.
1) I see you are running 7.1Ch Sound Card, why?
I need 8 channels of audio. 1) tweeters 2) Midrange 3) Midbass 4) Sub but right now the soundcard is running in stereo mode.

2) How do you send the signal from your 7.1Ch Sound Car to your amps?
Currently, I am using the optical out and sending a digital stereo signal to my Alpine PXA-H701 Processor from the soundcard. THe alpine processor then performs the filtering/crossover for each channel and time delay and EQ. I have not switched over yet to the software->soundcard->amps
3) Now, can u answer question #2 and not use Alpine Sound Processor in your answer .
Without the processor, I have to do a couple things to make it work.

1)My soundcard has a feature called directwire. I can take a WDM audio stream (wave output from winamp) and send it to ASIO applications.

2)In a program called console, I can take an ASIO audio stream and send it through a bunch of VST plugins all connected together that perform the filtering, time delay and EQ.

First I use two 31 band EQ's, one for left one for right. Then those are connected to the input of a vst plugin called Frequency Allocator that perfomrs the crossovers or filters. Last, frequency allocator send the 2 filtered audio channels to 8 outputs into a stereo delay for each pair. That way I can time the sound coming form the speakers so that they arrive at my ears at the correct timing.

4) With Soft that you are using can you set X-over points? Something like (20Khz>4Khz for tweets::4Khz>80hz for mids::80hz>20hz for Sub) and be safe and sure that tweeters wont blow?
Yes I can set it to whatever frequencies I need. Tweeter protection is a problem I am working on. I was finally putting this to a test today in my car. I almost blew up my tweeters. I though about fusing them but that does not help the problem if the software fails. I am not sure what would happen yet, but I was having some driver issues with my soundcard and it's going to be a serious problem I need to consider. I could put a passive filter on them to protect them, but then it introduces phase delay, something which I am trying to eliminate. Frequency Allocator does phase correction int he phase arrbitrator portion of is processing, but does not correct for any passive filters I put on the speakers. I am trying to come up with some tweeter protection ideas at the moment.
5) How many bads does the best EQ has for Carputer? From what I saw there is only 31Band EQ is that over all or per channel?
There are many different EQ's available as VST plugins. I have seen one as high as 61 band actually. With the program console, you can "wire" in as many EQ's as you need. You could use one over the whole spectrum or you could put one on each separate channel. Alot depends on how fast your computer con do the processing though. If you have a slower computer, you are going to have to limit the ammount of EQ's you use. Not all the Eq's are the same either, here was one EQ that most seemed to like. Check out www.kvraudio.com forums. I don;t remember which one they said was better but if you do a bit of searching you can find it.

This whole software processing is fairly new. The Frequency allocator program just came out towards the end of last year so this is kind of experimental. You can do something similar with older creative audigy cards and the kxproject drivers, but nothing near as cool as this.

Hope this helps, I'll be posting more in my worklog as I experiment.

Cheers

When 7.1Ch PCI audio card is stock its in Surround Sound mode and the rear, side speakers play only when track has something in the back or side. So my question is, with console and plug ins can I have somethings like:

Front speaker outs (2ch) > Go to tweeters
Side speaker outs (2ch) > Go to mid's
Rear speaker outs (2ch) > Go to mid-bass
Subwoofer out (1ch) > Go to subwoofer

So the console program and plugins can change what the card actually sends out of its outputs?
Yes. Any 7.1 card can do it. One thing to keep in mind is that not all cards can "grab" the WDM audio stream from winamp. You need to do this to stream the audio into console. Console then does the routing. Some Audiotrak cards have "Directwire" which does this. M-Audio has some cards that do it as well (example firewire410). For all the other non-pro cards, you can use a program called Virtual Audio Cable to create a virtual soundcard input to the console program. The other way is to loop the spidif from the out back in to the input of the soundcard if is has both spdif in/out.

The Wiki/first post of the Software thread has descriptions on how to do both. Some of us are working on a guide for particular options as we get it working.

Hope this helps.
Darin
