Already tried the top cubby. He didn't like the idea, I think it was too far to reach he might have said. It would be my top choice as well.

Hellbent, I was thinking the Lower cubby for an AM headunit, but I have no idea how big it is in there, Haven't been in an Altima for a while. How much room is in there. From the pic it looks too narrow, but maybe modifications could be made pretty easily. As Durwood says, at least there is tons of options to play with. My new Truck is SO limiting. Its frustrating. You may have to get a little creative, but at least you've got some great clay to work with.

EDIT - how about putting an AM in the upper cubby? Maybe even get it far enough back to close the door...
Its not the cards you're dealt, its how you play the hand!

hmmm top cubby for the stereo might work well, the bottom one might be too narrow. I think the wires at the back of the HU are kinda short tho, so im gonna have to play around with them and see if they reach the top cubby. Being able to hide the stereo in the top cubby wud be a distinct advantage!

Yup there is quite a bit of room to play around with...thats what i like about the 05 Altima

You could put an after market deck up there. A wiring harness for the am deck will give you a considerable increas in wire length and allow you to plug right into the old radio harness, meaning you dont' have to cut the cars wires. Even if a worst case, where you had to extend those wires, they are easy as anything to extend, but with a harness you shouldn't have to extend anything.

And then the one that comes with the new after market head unit looks like this

They wire togethre at the ends, and see how long that is??

I am super partial to Alpine. In all my years intalling and owning a shop I always came back to my old friend. There are plenty of good head units out there. Pioneer, Nakamichi, Alpine, Eclipse, they all make good head units. If you are going to be using it to simply power the stock speakers, you should like for a HU with good functionality, an Aux out and a fairly good quality internal amp. I actually have an awesome Alpine Head Unit that I am planning to put on Ebay soon. PM me if you interested. I used it for a little while to run my car computer in the Civic, Wait, actually, its right above in that post.. HEHE. I liked for the car computer in the Civic for a few reason

    1. Its an alpine.
    2. It had a particularly shallow mount depth, and I knew I'd be relocating it.
    3. It has 512 different colors you can choose from for the display so it can match any cars interior light color.

It plays Mp3s with folder organization and has built in time correction and Eqs, etc. Its a great great deck! Alpine 9833. I will let it go pretty cheap, shipping wont' be bad either from MA to NJ.... Let me know.

Otherwise, almost any good HU with at least 35w per channel internal amp should work for you, but if your gonna relocate it, just be careful of large mounting depth radios.

OH, I also have and will include the AUX adapter to plug in the car computer to the aux port of the Alpine.

EDIT - please don't think I'm trying to pimp my "Radio For sale on you" either, I'm just making the offer. I still consider Alpine a number choice regardless. But you may want to look for something brand new or something you think is more appropriate.

    Amp conversation

    2. You can use the stock speakers but it would be a good idea to check the Ohm rating. Most likely they will be 4 or 2Ohm. This will help choose the size amp you need. If you don't care about blowing your ears out you might also look at an after-market head unit with a good built in amp and AUX input. THis would avoid running power wires, finding a place for the amp, etc. and possibly cut down on price. I would still recommend after-market speakers for better sound though.
    3. I think you misunderstood what he said. The 2 channel amp would be use bridged mono to a single channel for the sub.
    4. A big limitation. Look into either a good quality USB or PCMCIA sound card.

    Hope this helps.
