Another update from the Pixel Qi folks - from their blog - they are developing a 7" screen next, and are gearing up for mass production. I went over to the Maker shed, where their 10" upgrade kits are sold, and they seem to be in stock.

This might be a nice product to get and review... if someone hasn't already purchased and is willing to do so.

Pixel Qi keeps on rolling - they've announced a partnership with a company that has a low power controller board that enables their screens to be plugged in as low power, secondary screens via USB/wireless USB:

    Low-power, wireless displays made possible!

wow! 1.5 watt power consumption, and it can the controller is compatible with usb, wireless usb, and 10/100/1000 ethernet displays...

make it a 7" with optically boned capacitive touch screen, for less then $400, and i will loose many excuses to not get a new/additional screen..

they're not as good as they sound for sunlight readability,
sure you can get sunlight readable screen, but its practically black and white.
in the full color mode you'll still have the same issue.
not only that, i don't think the screen does the switch automatically.

good point, i knew it, but forgot

but still, it is going to be a high res. b/w screens, and for carpc's, how much color do you really need? i purposely keep dfx4 black w/ white lettering for better readability..

at the current cost, they are pretty reasonable for sunlight readability-- the 10.1" netbook-replacement screen in the makershed.com store is going for $275...

To clarify the screen can display colors in sunlight if you turn on the backlight. Only if the backlight is off will the screen display in grayscale.

The screen has three modes depending on ambient light (sunlight or dark) and the backlight (on or off): reflective, transmissive and transflective.

Reflective is on when it's dark and backlight is off. The screen will be in grayscale mode.

Transmissive is on when it's dark and backlight is on. The screen will be in color mode.

Reflective is on when it's bright and backlight is on. The screen will be in color mode but the colors will be desaturated.

Information above taken from their datasheet: http://cdn.makezine.com/make/pdf/pix...pec_pub1_0.pdf

I am still researching the screen as it seems to be a good alternative to other sunlight readable screens out there.

The only cons that I can so far is that they only have one size (10.1 inch) but a 7 inch is in the works. A custom LVDS cable is probably required to work with a mini-itx motherboard. Finally I am not sure if it can have a touchscreen on top, the datasheet makes it seem that the screen is pretty fragile.

yes, the size and lack of touch screen is the major issue for me-- the only way to keep the optical properties of the screen would be to get a touch screen overlay optically bonded to the screen...

I actually like the size, but how can I make it work with VGA/DVI?
