Droid X Android as Carputer.
I am pretty impressed so far with this.
I was running Centrafuse on a laptop. While it was very cool when I first started using it. There was a lot of leg work to get it set up and working properly. I did have bluetooth and tried to get it working with my phone, but it was a hassle and it didn't always work well.
There is still some work to be done in this area to get the phone stuff working flawlessly with noice reductions, what types of mics to use etc.
I have recently started using the Droid X with the Car Mount. When the droid X is put into the Car mount, there is some UI that starts up with buttons to make using it driver friendly.
Plus the Voice Command is a pretty cool feature along with the Google Navigation Beta.
I can say "Navigate to" and some address, It will think for a few seconds, then bring back what it thought I said, then basically start navigating me to those directions.
I can say "Navigate to nearest Italian Resturaunts". I get a list of resturaunts, then I chose one and it navigates me there.
The navigation has layers like Real Time Traffic. It was pretty impressive. I could pick Naviget to a contact list person and off I go.
It seems as good if not better then what I get out of the Garmin Mobile PC I was running under the Centrafuse.
There is nothing to install on the Car, like Screen, wires etc. It is pretty cool. There are a lot of apps and many more to come. It could easily give the Centrafuse / carputer a run for it's money that is for sure.
Cost is about $200.00 and a 2 year contract plan from verizon for instance. It's your phone and carputer in one.
with the Apps market, there will probably more Carputer type apps to add to the Andoid in the future as I do see a market for it.
Just some thoughts.
