Or...and this is a wacky idea, I know, but hear me out...we could judge people as individuals.

Making something illegal doesn't actually stop people from doing it. Just ask the vicims of gun violence in DC and/or Chicago. "But, there can't be any guns...they're illegal!!"

    Educate people. REAL driver training.
Funny thing is, other countries, Germany for example, are so strict. You have to pass a few tests and take driving school for a certain amount of time. Im not sure if they have bans on cell phones and stuff though. I do know they have speed cameras though :-\

I shouldn't have been insulting, thanks for editing it out.

I feel the rest of what I said still stands though.

I use the Space Navigator knob. It allows me to change audio sources and select different stations/playlists/songs/channels/etc. without taking my eyes off the wheel.
Good stuff. This is the kind of stuff that *should* be done more. Although I hope you do it without taking your eyes off the road; keeping your eyes on the wheel doesn't sound like none too good an idea either :-)

So in drivers ed they should have a section dedicated to "How to safely text and drive"?

YES...... simply pull over and do your thing. That may cause traffic though, lol..... We should make a solution that is hands free for texting. Why hasnt anyone come up with something? Im not a program so I dont know.

The new google voice actions allows you to send a text and email completely via voice. Such technologies could be ported to any version of android, someone could make an awesome car ready android skin run android in the car and boom, you can send texts and emails and call people without ever taking a finger off the wheel. Safety at its finest.

But its based for the Android. If they make a PC version then that would be awesome.

Japan also has a driver Ed program that's pretty intensive ... I still drive better eventhough I have a clue what half the signs mean. Education or driver fault? Driver!

I am interested in using my carpc for texting, since it doesn't make sense.
I have an app called dragon dictation, good stuff but still not good enough. I'd expect a few more years before this actually is star trek level.

    More on topic:
studying the statistical reports is pointless to certain extent. The report would have to be extremely laid out beyond your average myth busters try to be worth while.

Users - I did already mention that some basics of NLP would be necessary to pre-scan testees. This is because there are 3 basic types of people 1.) visual 2.) audio 3.) kinestetic. If you know this then your data is more on the nose. If not, the kinestetic folks will complain about not having a tactile input, the audios will complain about not having an audio clue and the visuals will complain about not having the right contrast or button layout. Me, I need a logical layoutout with audio notifications.

Having said that, ui development by a group at Redmond is probably not way to go and probably would hope Cupertino can come up with something better.

Next up are folks various degrees of experience with and acceptance of technology. I mentioned this earlier too. Grow
up with Microsoft flight controllers or one of those 20 button mice than I'm sure fiddling with a touch screen is that much easier.

2 skins that I have liked are CF and the one being worked on for OM. But that's a personal choice. So the obvious answer is to get a study group based among users here and start going to town. I'm sure with the varied tastes in driving we'd be able to come pretty close to what works in various situations.

However, the physical location of our monitors will also be an issue. I don't think too many of us have option nor the willingness to put the screen top front center.

Regarding the cell phone blabbing issue, I came here because I was liking for a safer way to do that. Police is one thing but more importantly is that our technology has created the situation that people have grown or should I say become dependent upon 24/7 access. Bluetooth in the car is here for the better or worse.

Actually, I agree with the call to arms. We really should also start focusing on a better utility of what we use to interface with when we use our equipment. I also do really believe that we can make a difference.

However, is there enough in this concept of making the ui safer worthwhile?

3 weeks and it will be available for PC - just not cf, so not an option zx1 would even consider

I think chunkyks made a great point with his post..... There are two extremes here and neither are correct. Banning all in car applications is an extreme and ill informed decision. Many applications if properly designed have the potential to decrease driver distraction and/or increase driver safety. At the same time half the people on these forums use systems in their car that are FAR more distracting then anything shipped in your average car. Now just because you personally enjoy the system or haven't hit anything yet doesn't change the fact that many in car PC designs are unsafe at best... I couldn't agree more about the distracting skin design point he made.

Yet they allow tv on your nav screen.

Now as for the topic at hand, we all know there are many reasons to get distracted...

Can you tell if texting was involved in any of the above? I doubt it. Arguing with the passenger, acting stupidly, EVEN WHILE USING A HANDSFREE BLUETOOTH HEADSET in one of the videos.

If your mind is somewhere else ***** can happen, or rather will happen. Engage your mind and one hand steering will be the least of your problems.

    Just MHO.

Engaging your mind outside of task at hand (driving) is dangerous, be it thinking about an arguement, the skirt on the corner, your job or even day
    dreaming are all dangerous.

The question the is if is not just as dangerous as tinkering with some thing that is different than the steering wheel?

Is there going to be movent to start working on an interface that can portable to the different FEs? We could even brand it as a mp3car design!
