The government still knows better than you

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is still talking about forcibly removing the ability for drivers to be distracted, starting with cellphones.

    lol, nice title..

every year, it seams there is less and less motivation for me to even think of wanting a newer car.. i am really starting to think we should all go back to carbureted motors...

one thing he that might need to be worked out is how this would affect 911 service in the car-- say you get in a serious accident, and the scrambler device still thinks the car is moving--now you can't call for help...

    And then passengers....

I find it amazing that phones are "more dangerous" than passengers!

And I find it amazing that phones get priority over the road.

But I wonder if phones comes down to GSM and what was stated by a high-Police here - that GSM interferes with the brain.
Mind you, that was only said once.... never again.

    I wonder why?

Let's actually make sure drivers know how to drive before a licence is issued, that would be a better first step to safety IMO.

So what about SatNav? Thats more distracting than using a mobile phone with a hands-free kit because you need to look at the screen and potentially update settings while your drive. I mean the driving experience as a whole requires you to constantly divert your attention, be it checking your Dials, changing the radio and it only takes a fraction of a second to miss something. I fail to see how this is any different to talking to the person next to you. No news of anything like this in the UK yet though but it wouldn't surprise me.

Theres thousands of stupid ideas they research... I think we all know this would never happen. A manufacturer could never sell a car with a system like that installed.

Actually that's kind of surprising, no offense, but the more draconian monitoring for your own good laws, seem to happen there first, then we adopt them.

Actually, I take that back. It seems anymore the developed nations seem to have shifted from arms race to race to see who can pass the most laws to save everyone from the boogey-men, each other, and themselves.

A friend of mine has a cell scrambler. If you turn it on while driving, you can watch people around you swerve as they try to figure out why their cell phone suddenly stopped working....

That sounds like a jammer - not a scrambler.

Scramblers should never effect adjacent traffic (pun intended) - it give the game away if nothing else.
