The National Transportation Safety Board just called for "the first-ever nationwide ban on driver use of personal electronic devices (PEDs) while operating a motor vehicle."
Their press release is Here.

i can't say i blame them..
i only question the effectiveness of more laws on the subject..
i mean, chicago has a ban on handguns, yet i hear of shootings/killings every time i watch the news...
i know it's been discussed before, but stuff like this is something that people need to take the initiative on and enforce them-self from doing, and i don't believe should be something that laws should be required for..
btw, you can use statistics to prove anything, 50% of the people know that!
check out how many people die a year by food posioning...
you will find it quite more than their 3000 lives in peds
as george carlin would say, its all a MINOR RISK, take a chance!
course i would love to ban texting...and have everyone use handsfree..
but what about EATING when driving, and shall i say doing make-up, and good good i hope no one is shaving(better be electric :) :))
how about we ban driving, then no one will die from distracted driving
my 3 cents...yes one more than 2
Mitch, I agree with your view on this also.
Mr. George Carlin will surely be missed.....he's the best comic standup in my book, hands down!!! :clap2:
Everyone needs to use handsfree for sure,..........but, how about this guy?

Now I'm really nervous. Flying is much safer?.....What BULLxxxT!! :yell:
they're only a solid 5 years too late on the subject. Good luck gettin all of the car manufacturers to basically dumb billions of dollars worth of R&D on OEM handsfree devices down the drain
Lets all throw away our GPS's and cell phones
lol, i said this exact same thing a couple of hours ago...
i don't think that any law would ever get passed to allow for the extent that they are calling for. i completely understand outlawing texting and driving, but to outlaw cell phones all together, i just think is nearly impossible..
And good luck to the Cops who use electronic devices all the time while driving to check plates etc.
Or is it ok for them to break the law?
Better ban passengers too - the biggest distraction drivers have.
Mind you, one copper in Aus actually admitted the mobile phone ban in Australia was due to the effects of GSM on the brain and not their "distraction" - but he was quickly shut up. Ironically we used to have the less intrusive CDMA.
For analog and CDMA users, maybe your CD players and radios need to be banned.
Maybe ban cars and have single-seat motorbikes for everyone - isn't that the ultimate "non-distractive" safety?
[ I'd love to straighten the statistics comment, but since YOU rarely get to see the statistics (you only see their interpretation), IMO it's pointless. ]
I know this statement is a side note of the thread but as the Systems Engineer at a private aviation company that uses iPads for nav data... trust me, iPads are way safer than how nav data used to be. It used to be 70lbs of paper charts in a black bag that the pilot had to get up, walk to, rifle through and retrieve his chart. Then hold said paper chart under a little light to see it. The 70lbs of paper were replaced with Panasonic toughbook tablets a few years ago in our company. These monsters were better but were much heavier, clumsier and required a stylus. The pilots lined up to high five IT when we handed them their iPads.
Besides... there are two pilots in any commercial flight. One holds the iPad and gives instructions, the other flies the plane.
Back on topic, I read an article in a local paper about how even though texting has increased, deaths from car accidents have decreased substantially in the last few years. They claim it is the safety of the vehicles and they are likely correct. Bottom line is you cannot protect everybody from everything... people die and it absolutely sucks.
