If all I wanted was infotainment then I would just install head unit with usb input. but I want it all engine diagnostics, slingbox, tpms, parking sensors, gps, xm, unrestricted internet, able to buy a printer if I need and use it on the road, a scanner or whatever else I might want, buy it a local store and plug it in and have it work. Using proven hardware/software that I know will do the job. I am sure apple will make a fine infotainment system locked down to their app store and locked down for mods. Vegas Guy stick with the proven systems and just make them better. Just my 2 cents SNO

As long as it includes iTunes, it won't be better. Freedom of choice is better.

Better or not, I'm just glad someone else is diving into the arena to attempt it.

sure they can. they have money and the fans buy most of their crap

but i think/hope audi & co. will keep on their own systems. which are nearly perfect, and improved every generation.

touchscreens as main input device are bad. i dont want to see people driving around, focused on their screens, like they are running around now...

but maybe this will add a new way of natural selection ]:>

As long as OEMs feel the need to sell proprietary infotainment solutions the industry as a whole will suffer because of the lack of protocols and standards. With a baseline set of conformities, OEMs could do a far better job of system design and implementation. Infotainment systems are basically at the point that smartphones were before the big 3 came along, with everyone producing their own fractured OS and selling them as premium features.

The OEMs hold all the cards here. Nobody buys a car specifically for the infotainment system. It might weigh in the decision somewhat, but if that's the final sticking point, the dealer can easily overcome it....lower the price. In a market where (much like smartphones), they are all beginning to look and drive the same, product differentiation via the details is probably critical. And since the overwhelming majority of buyers are not going to know anything about the technical merits of a particular OS or application platform, it all comes down to features and marketing. Siri vs Google Voice vs MS TTS. Garmin vs Google Nav vs some version of TomTom.

Very much as its always been.
