My phone was recently upgraded to have Bluetooth PAN support instead of DialUpNetworking (firmware update on 8525). The problem I have is that I currently use centrafuse right now and it works great with DUN, but doesn't have any current support for PAN.
Any thoughts on how to get this working? Either a manual connection like DUN would work, or what i'd really prefer is to have the connection automatically made/removed depending on my phone's connectivity (through phone control).
I suspect this will be come a larger issue as eventually devices will probably all move from DUN to PAN.

I ran into the same problems with PAN replacing DUN on my phone... the 3.x roms for WM5 lack DUN.
Unfortunately, no matter how you set it up, PAN will never be as convinient as DUN unless they change it to work more like DUN. Before, I could leave my phone in my pocket and connect to the internet by clicking one button in CF. With PAN you have to physically connect it on the phone... huge inconvinience.
However... I have read that there is the possibility of DUN coming back in newer roms of WM6. Supposedly the reasons for removing it were not all that specific nor critical and its likely that we will see DUN return. Let's hope so...
Actually, as long as I can find more support for PAN (probably not too bad to add to Centrafuse, and David did mention he'd check into it), I'd prefer to keep it.
It might be an inconvenience to change over, but I much prefer using InternetSharing, and having full data on my device while the carpc has access too. So I'm hoping we just find more PAN support (both here and for other apps), as more WM phones will be going that direction. I found that setting up a WirelessModem for DUN was a pain, since I always have data going anyway (unlimited data plans, etc) it kept forcing me to kill that connection before trying to start the modem. On top of that I found that sometimes the DUN connection would be hit or miss (say it was connected but not really be getting any data, etc).

PAN support would be nice, noone really knows when we could be able to get our DUN support back in WM, and if support is ever comming back in WM5.
It sucks that u have to initiate the connection everytime and on both ends, but this will probably be fixed in upcumming releases.

According to Microsoft, PAN and DUN are the same exact thing, but PAN actually offers an interface on the phone (i.e. Internet Sharing), whereas DUN was fully controlled via the PC. A look into the registry of the 8525 proves this to be true... the "PAN" service is still called "Dial-Up Networking."
They have said the move was to make it much easier to connect to the internet, but I agree with those of you that think it's a pain to have take out your phone, go to Internet Sharing, tell it to connect, and THEN you can connect your pc to it. Perhaps Microsoft wasn't considering the Car PC crowd in this move. I will say however that it definitely is nice in that it has done away with the pain-in-the-a$$ of setting up the BT modem on your pc. Too bad it has in turn introduced the pain-in-the-a$$ of having to go to your phone everytime you want to connect.
The PAN profile of your WM device can be switched on/off by using the BluetoothControl plug-in. I will look into it and see if there's a way to add that feature to PhoCo to make it automatic.

For me anyway the DUN was a bigger hassle since I had to click through more dialog on the phone, and it was hit or miss as to whether it'd work. At least with PAN I click it on, and everything works fine. I think this is a different issue for people that use USB to connect the two, but since I'm using bluetooth the PC doesn't instantly activate the connection. But, if the phoco plugin could do it, that'd be perfect as that's really the only time i'm using the connection.
I found this registry hack that should enable ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) upon boot-up of the phone. This way, you should not have to hit any buttons on the phone to initiate the connection. I hope this helps!
It is a registry setting that will enable to bluetooth PAN (Internet sharing) to start as soon as the device is turned on. It is a registry hack, so if those two words scare you, do not continue.
1. Download some type of mobile registry editor. (google it and you should find one)
2. Start an activesync synchronization (either via Bluetooth or USB)
3. Open the Mobile Registry Editor. Go to the following folder:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Bluetooth\PAN
You will see a registry entry that says “ActivateOnBoot” the data value is set at 0. Change it to 1. After you do this, close the Mobile Registry Editor.
4. Reset your phone and enjoy!
Tried this, but it doesn't work for me. After resetting the phone, ICS is NOT activated. Double-checked the registry to make sure the tweak remained, and it did, therefore it should be working. But it's notOriginally Posted by ccrobin
