It would take so much more work in one of the legacy languages, which is probably why frodo and all the others don't do so. For the 30MB~ that .net takes up it is well worth it and I haven't really seen any speed differences and in fact I have seen web benchmarks with ASP.NET vs ASP vs PHP etc. where .NET was the fastest or right at the top and its all the same framework so I imagine the speed benefits are for desktop software as well.
