Hey, how come no body told me about this: http://www.mp3car.com/tracker/tracker.html
David... build it in to CF (Please?).
Have you guys seen this: http://gmap.glenmurphy.com/
It uses your GPS to center on Google Maps. In my opinion, Google maps looks better than any nav program, plus they now have satelite photography view. It's only a matter of time before they add traffic to the map too. This is Google after all.
If this could be built in to CF, that would be totally cool! We already have traffic in CF, maybe it would be easy to just build this code into that.
Speaking of traffic, I would also like it if when you load traffic it could auto scroll down and to the right a configurable amount to have the traffic map propperly centered.
As for needing internet, I don't use GPS that often and can plug in my phone when I need it. However, if you have sprint with vision, then for $20 add-a-line you can have an always-on internet connection in your car... just buy a bluetooth phone or an old phone that you can get a usb cable for.

Thats unlikely to happen guys... The tracker is not only something that can be built into the frontend...it requires a server to display/store the info... (in this case mp3car.com webserver)
CF could include a viewer. Just give it an IP to upload to (or even copy the log over wireless or "sneaker-net") and view the log in CF from car or desktop. Besides, my whole point was I want Google maps as my secondary GPS program (live, and via a log file).
I am working with Frodo to test this out. To have this running in your car you would need an internet connection. He told me it would need to be at least 9600bps. That would be to transmit the data to the webserver. You would then need to load your position and the google map from the server to your carputer.
Don't know if this can be done on a 56k modem, I will be trying.
What if you load the google maps locally and run an web server on your carputer. It would slow it down a lot and you couldn't use compact flash but it's and idea.
Spent all my money on carputers now I have to work a real job.

I know my Sprint cell phone is fast enough. It works fine with "movin gmap". I just want it built into CF and logged.
Is it really possible do download all the Google Map data and serve it yourself? (I wouldn't think so.)
This seem's like such a niche requirement it's not even worth doing, surely?
You won't have turn-by-turn directions for a start, or rotating map.
Surely you're better off using Destinator for routing, GPSGate to split your GPS signal and Xbrady's tracking software running in the background.

It might work getting all the images to download for a particular area from google...
. the problem I see with it is that you need 1 image-set for each zoom level
. no street names
. no routing
maybe some others... but it would be cool cause the maps are so high quality and pretty...![]()
