I can only speak from experience. I've done it thousands of times without problems.

I've done it before too (by accident or when my computer lcoks up), but it is not safe. Sometimes on-reboot WinXP even prompts you and says "Windows was not shutdown properly. Windows will now check your disc for consistancy. Press ESC now to abort." If you let it run scandisc, it will sometimes find errors. This is on new 200GB+ harddrives I have. I'm not imagining this people. Windows can cache 100's of megs that running programs "think" they have written to the harddrive (and expect to be there for the next time they are run). By hard-powering off your PC, that 100MB of data is lost. This is not good!

This argument could go on forever... Bottom line is windows should be properly shutdown to be safe... Microsoft does have things in place in newer version of windows which allow people to get away with not shutting down properly without USUALLY having problems, but it's still not a good practice and YES it WILL potentially cause problems eventually... I would love to see how STABLE your system stays after not properly shutting down with programs like Adobe Photoshop, Outlook, and Visual Studio loaded. The beginings of this whole conversation were based on the discussion about me saving current song position so when Centrafuse is reloaded it will remember the songs current position. This data will only be saved when Centrafuse receives a proper shutdown command for performance reasons. So if you just kill your PC, then Centrafuse will not remember the current song position... If your cool with that and cool with a POTENTIAL crash one day, then just kill the PC...

I have a MAME arcade cab that I always forced-shutoff. After about 3 weeks, it finally KILLED the hard drive. I had to reinstall everything from scratch. NEVER AGAIN!!!!

I know it's coming as a plugin, but XM support sure would be nice.. especially if it could be mixed into the WAV line, and then have equalization applied to it.

I have periodically run scandisk - maybe once every six months. It did usually find some minor errors, which I thought was more likely attributable to the drive bouncing around in the trunk of my car. The errors were never substantial enough to keep my system from working.

To be fair, my experience with hard shut downs has been with carputer version 1. Initially I was using using WinME then I upgraded to WinXP. With both operating systems I was typically only running Winamp when I shut down. With carputer version 2 (CF, NAV, etc.) I will be using hibernation to avoid reloading everything each time.

I'm not advocating hard shutdowns, but just pointing out that with my relatively primitive system it was not a problem over a long period of time.

    "My Idea" !!

Im using a switch witch is intregated on the side of my Driveing seat.
The switch cuts the remote+ to M1-Atx witch simulates the on/of button and the button make a nice and clean hibernate.

When i startup from hibernation the application "HibernateTrigger" will execute one of my exe files i have worked with this night. The exe is a script that executes accesscontrol + female voice will say "please enter password"

When proper code is entered accesscontrol will launch a speciefied exe = play cool wav file nr2 and execute centrafuse and Phonecontrol, (autostart every program you want)

When i start a hibernation, the trigger will kill all launched appz and of course a bye bye wav file is played

This would help alot in gps programs and blutooth connection that don`t reconnect when coming up from hibernation.
And to start your favourite appz from hibernation as well
