That won't keep me from giving CONSTRUCTIVE feeback to David, so I hope you don't mind. If you don't like my posts however, you are free to close your eyes, or look elsewhere.
90% of your comment was destructive not constructive, with not other foundation than - you personally don't like the way it works...

He was voicing his concerns over usability of the new menu. Yes, that part isn't very constructive, but at least he gave some (darn good) reasons for the dislike and request to have it changed.

He's doing better than "I don't like it", but stating that he doesn't like the fact that he has to spend more time paying attention on what he's clicking than he had to before. I see that as perfectly valid.

    OK, so Back on topic...

Turbocad: I sure wish I was wrong, but upon close inspection of the new skin XML file, it appears that the drop down menu is a MUST.

Basically, there is a region defined (the 'closed menu', that when clicked, will reveal a full 'menu' image (i.e., the open dropped-down menu).

I hope David proves me wrong!

i would have to agree with Justintime 100% on every he said.
But also would like to add some other observations:

Along with usability being #1 requirement, i have to give a hats off to david for the setup for CF. Absolutely the best setup/config tool for any frontend avail. I can feel confident that if i were to install CF in my car i can go through the whole setup and not go blind in the process or have to fiddle with txt files etc.

The media manager is still very confuseing, takes too many clicks to play music.
This is the fastest version of CF, zero lag, but thats on my desktop.

Overall i like the new version a lot, there are some UI issues that could be fixed with a skin, but with NO tools to create a skin its gonna be more of the same (only color variations based on original skin, maybe 1 or 2 original skins) which is a shame.

Seems to be pretty stable now, and no serious issues that make using it impossible, other than the double click, no way you can acually use it in the car with double clicks everywhere.

overall very nice, and i would recomend CF to a non computer savy user to get up and running quickly, but ill still use RoadRunner.

about the skinner. i think you need to take in consideration that this is the first release with the final skinning 'code?' in place a skinner would be only time consuming to make a skinner for every release. however now the skin is final i hope to see one soon after any mayor bugs are fixed. If David would have asked peeps here if they rather wait for CF1.6 with skinner but then the release would be later everybody would scream release without

the thing i like of CF that its a whole package i don't want to keep messing with ini files etc just want to install and having it working day after day for me carputing is a hobby but most of all i use it because of the features like a lot of music and navi not because i want to tweak it every weekend

but i hope just like justintime that the dropdown is optional as that would greatly improve the amount of skins that will be made for cf.

I personally really like 1.6. I think the purpose of having the drop down menu is to have more space freed up to make bigger buttons and space them out more. I do agree that it is hard to go from navigation back to media but I think that could be worked out by adding the menu button to every screen. I just think we are all having a hard time with it because we were so used to navigating around 1.4 and 1.5.

But I do have a suggestion for the final release, how bout if it comes with both 1.5 (with bugs worked out) and 1.6 layouts in the end. Sort of how winamp gives both the classic and modern skins. I think that would be cool because I really liked 1.5 as well and it would be cool to be able to switch back and forth based on whether I want a more "sporty" 1.5 or a more "refined/classy" 1.6. It would be a waste to trash 1.5 when it came this far. Just an idea...

I think it's too early to say whether or not the new dropdown menu is going to be a usability problem. I'm willing to give it a few weeks' trial before I make up my mind. Half the battle is going to be getting used to where everything is, and customizing it.

I like the look of the new skin; it'll be interesting to see how the day one looks but this is OK for me.

The music/media manager is too confusing. WTF is with all the buttons? Arrows up, down, left, right, play, skip, my god! I just want a grid of all my album art to come up by default, and let me have an easy way to do a random play of other stuff - all, genre, etc. I'll have to see if I can make it do that.

Crappy old D3 is a bummer, but I know David's working on that.

Wierd gamma-changing thing for night mode still there. I don't like that.

For me the big plus: 1.6 sounds much better! This I wasn't expecting but the difference in sound quality with HQ MP3 files (256k) is night and day with 1.5. This makes me very happy! Thanks David - I dunno what you did, but I like it.

I also have a bunch of bugs to post in the other thread.

I just drove across the country and once you get use to the dropdown menu, it is actually very easy to use, at least for me it was... The real estate is needed to make all the other buttons clickable on a 7" screen, it was just necessary...

not sure what you find so confusing about the media manager... just open it, go to music/albums... click an album and hit the biggest button on the screen Play Now... next time you hit media manager it will be sitting on your albums, select a new one, hit play now...

you want to shuffle all your music, hit back, select albums, hit play now... this plays all albums...

    quite simple to me...

The picutre browser is limited IMO. I played with it at 1:30am, and couldn't figure out how to clear the playlist. Too many clicks, but that is kind of good for the future, as the buttons are big and easy to click on. The contrast is good IMO.
The menu should slide down a bit slower for a nice effect.

Maybe an idea, if it isn't possible yet: make it possible the menu doesn't close... this way you can move it to the left and have the same as before. Just a little adjusting the skin.
