The answer is no. It is impossible. A full OSK will only be possible with full english aplhabet plus international chars.

Example. Norwegian alphabet goes like this:
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZÆØÅ

I don't like the idea of having multifunction letter like A or O.. I just think about how I enter stuff in my phone and that is a pain. Having to pause at times to enter another letter again because the system is reading it as a cycle.
You did not understand me. I'd hate to scroll too... I do not mean cycling throug the chars. But by writing a o instead of an ø to be accepted. So instead of writing Skøyen, I can write Skoyen and still find my street.

The way the OSK works in 1.6 when I type Skoyen, I'm not able to select Skøyen. It's not in the list. I have to write Sk and then scroll throug all adresses starting with Sk before selecting Skøyen. An adress starting with Ø is not typeable... I have to scroll my way to it.

I got it now... So US uses 26 standard letters and most other countries use 29, I notice german uses 29 and you say Norwegian. Will adding 3 more main letter locations solve the problem for all countries or do some need more than 29?

Emm...maybe. :S Here's what's on my keyboard:
QWERTYUIOP
ASDFGHJLÑ[SPECIAL KEY TO ACCENT THE FOLLOWING CHAR]Ç
<ZXCVBNM,.-

So we exchange the US-English ; for the ñ and add a ç in a place that US keyboards don't have a key. Everything else is punctuation and accents.

Speaking just of keys, then, with one additional you could handle Spanish and Catalan keyboards, and I think the other romance languages. I don't know how many in addition to that you would need for the Scandanavian languages but suspect it isn't a lot more. So that's the keys.

There is another issue with respect to accented characters but I decided not to post it here until I have a chance to test it with Destinator.

In scandinavia we require 3 additional key slots compared to english. But if compromise is required, we funnish people can live with 2.

David, Congratulations on your good support to users all over the world! this is what will put CF apart from SD... they are solely dedicated to the US market, and dont give a who to anyone outside the us... their own way of doing business but imho you are far ahead!

Anyways, just for comments sake, I'd vote for a alternate osk in all osk views... this is because in portuguese and other languages there are many more than 3 addtl characters...

such as áàãéèíìó&# 242;úùõ, etc...

Cheers

I have alternate character screens that can be used. I was mainly looking for all the characters that HAVE to be on the main keyboard letter view for all the languages. After some googling it appears that not many keyboards made have more than 30 characters for non shift/alt keys, the main letters... I'm hoping I can get away with adding 3 to both...

Again they are 100% configurable in layout via XML files. You can modify what shows up on any button in either state...

Right on!

If you ever get to a point where you would like me to test your destinator implementation on a large map let me know... sao paulo is about the 3rd largest city in the world, and very complex in terms of roads... As I put in my earlier post in this thread (page 1), many ppl's gps frontends using destinator have been having problems with large maps... if you want me to help you testing let me know!

There are no large map issues here, but I'm not 100% sure how I will be distributing the Beta. I might have to distribute the Beta with only the example that works with only small maps and then create a smaller test group of registered users to test the large full maps, which would be provided for testing. This would not be our choice at Flux, but we have rules that we must follow based on signed agreements.

Either way we will come up with some way to get the testing done properly.

Cool, cause all D3 based gps programs that didnt use the original destinator dialog for entering addresses navigated to wrong places (including the CF implementation in the last version, Garonav, older Freedrive versions, etc)
