I have an EPIA board which has a parallel header on the MB. I connected a ribbon cable up to that, and a shielded parallel printer cable to the ribbon, which was quite long. I'm going to take out the printer cable and just use the ribbon cable with my new 16x2 display, so we'll see how that goes. I got no corruption using other display software like LCD Smartie - so I don't think it was hardware related. I'll keep that in mind though.

Be interested in how you go Mark.

Well, I just wired up a cable, plugged it all in and it looks like I probably crossed a line. All I get is a line of solid blocks across the bottom. Centrafuse _is_ trying to write to the display, you can see it clear and then the blocks come back.

I'm out of time to mess with it this morning, and I'm gone for the weekend, but I'll be back Sunday night.

    More when I know more!

    Soldering VFD display

Yeah soldering the parallel connector is an exercise in patience. I got an electronic engineer mate to do it because I don't have the skills - in exchange for me creating a website for him.

    bump...

Any word on if the VFD output is working? I don't have a working VFD and I can order one for testing, but it worked before mine broke...

midiwall, anyone else... did it work for you? if not what problems are you having...

    Couple of questions about VFDs.
Will it only support Parallel VFDs, or can you use serial/parallel ones?
    Also, what can you output.
I'm wanting to play with a VFD as a HUD when I build my next install (might be some time) and would love to be able to output say GPS directions on line 1 and 2 of a 4 line, and GPS speed on line 3 and 4. Or maybe OBDII speed and revs on 3 and 4, with the GPS stuff on top, with the top section being switchable from GPS to mp3/cd details or maybe auto displaying audio between direction updates. Can it do that, or is it planned to do that?

    It currently only supports parallel.

You can see what all you can output in settings.

Im still having trouble with mine.
    Ive posted the symptoms before.
HD44780 LCD problem in cf 1.5
originally posted for 1.5, I waited for 1.6 to come out and had the same problems. then another guy "BigTones" said he got his working, so I rewired another one of mine to use a bigger potentiometer thinking the contrast was an issue.

here is what I have learned about parrallel LCD's running the hitachi HD44780 proccessor.

software contrast adjustment DOES NOT WORK. I can use the LCDs just fine with "lcdcenter" so I know they work perfectly. but when I use a software program to adjust the contrast, they hang. - this is what I think CF is trying to do which is causing it to show nothing but bars.

Here is what my lcd works like when using LCDcenter2.0

as you can plainly see, this works perfectly well. even so far as scrolling custom text, cpu load, bandwidth in and out, things like that.

but as soon as I fire up CF and try to use it:

all I get are the "bootup test bars" and no happy scrolling text.
it could be something as simple as CF not properly sending the syncup signal to the LCD. because if I fire up cf and tell it to use the LCD then fire up lcdcenter to get it to scroll some text, the screen will fight between being blocked and showing text.. - ie "flickering"

good luck with this David! I want to install the lcd in my dash admidst my speedo cluster and stuff, so I can read off the song playing and stuff without taking my eyes so far off the road..
