I have notice a diff in sound Q also. I can not say that it is better or worst on my system, but it is diff. The vol level control has changed. I have played with the settings, but have not been able to get the same response. The vol does not increase at the same level as in RC1 0r RC2. I also run a nice system in my car and have a great understanding of Car Audio and sound Q. It seems that the level of bass is not equal to the rest of the sound across all vol levels. There has to have been some change or there would not be more then one person who has noticed it. ~ Darin

The one time I tried CF in the car, the volume was very, very low even at 100%. Couldn't figure out why, and when I would start RR it would be fine. So I haven't messed around with CF since then.

David has included support for Winamp DSP plugins on his future features list. Once that's done, hopefully soon , we can all load the Winamp "Enhancer" plug and sound quality will no longer be an issue for anyone. IMHO the sound quality of CF has improved significantly since the earlier versions. At this point I think it's at least as good as Winamp without a DSP plug. The problem for me is that while using RoadRunner I became terribly spoiled by the sound quality improvements made by adding Enhancer to Winamp.

Well I finished my conversion of what I had configured in RC2 to RC3 in about half an hour....to be honest......the sound is the same for me. Then again I normalize the sound to begin with. Even when not normalized the sound, the volumes for mine are for the most part properly consistant to begin with. Then again I'm testing this on a in-house stereo and not in my car with the good stereo. lol. Still, the point in which we recieve DSP capability will prove to be the point in which most sound quality problems will disappear for the most part. Then it will be the question of output voltage of sound cards, distortion factors in the other equipment.

To be clear, I upgraded from v 1.4

So, all I am saying, is that the sound quality is different between 1.4 and RC3.

I can say for sure if for better or for worse, but the bass response in particular is defiitely different, and in my case much worse. No tight rich bass.

Yeah, "anyone" who can't hear the phase distortion and mid-freq squishing that those plugins do to create the effect.

If you require math in software to make your system sound (objectively) "good" then something's wrong. Folks that rely on DSP magic should look into what the code is doing and replicate that in the real world. The net results will be FAR better.

As for CF... I'll again say that if you take a track and simply play it from within CF and then outside of CF, you will hear a difference. In the "RC3 bugs" thread, David has mentioned that he's messing with the DX params. The problem with doing that is that what may sound "better" to his ears only becomes "different" to someone else's.

If anything comes of THIS thread, I think it may be a suggestion to expose the various DX params and let US decide what we like.

    More info...

If you're curious about what's in DirectSound ("DS" / "DX") this is the entry point to MS's babble:

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...irectSound.asp

Some of it is pretty geeky, but one thing that you may be interested in is the standard effects library:

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...rd_Effects.asp

Of special note is the Parametric EQ - MUCH more useful than a graphic EQ. espcially in a car. It would be VERY cool to have that exposed in CF.

bad? For what, writing it myself? Winamp has been around a long time... I do not mess with the audio... All I can say is I can add a way to completly disable the EQ, then if you have normalization turned off then nothing would be changed...

now maybe winamp, WMP are adding something that makes it sound like you want, which completly goes against what was said above about modifying things...

unless you have experience in DirectX audio programming, don't chime in.. It's not simple, even with helper classes... sorry, but I write my own code and don't piggy back off other application like winamp or WMP...
