Is It Possible To Play Dvd's From Folder On Hard Drive?

There was a thread about a year ago with the title "Is it Possible to play DVDs from folder on hard drive?" The conclusion of that thread seemed to be that it was doable but not particularly elegant.

CF has been through a lot of changes since then, so I thought I would resurrect the question. Any input would be appreciated.

well......that depends what you mean. You can't just take a dvd and put it on your computer...... you would either have an image.......or rip it to file format of some sort. A movie dvd ....you want to rip.

I'm sure what your looking for is a way to copy it to your computer so you can watch it. This is called "dvd ripping" you might want to read about this on wikipedia or something.

CF can play movie files.....you just need to rip to divx and have the right codec installed.

no i dont think he means that. i think he means if you take a dvd and use dvdshrink so you have the dvd image as it was on the dvd on the hard drive....

you could try and add the vob files in order into a new playlist but i have doubts that will work and if it does its pretty dodgy (miss out on menu's and extra features etc etc) ...
for this kinda thinkg i normaly close cf and open powerDVD. there might be a way to embed powerDVD into cf but i have never tried.
Let the world roll along... Ill catch up later.

Yes, I was hoping to be able to transfer DVDs to my carputer and play them from within CF. Ideally, they would be in a folder on the hard drive called "DVDs" and CF would look to that folder when I hit the DVD button. From your posts and my research it looks like the best I'd be able to do is rip them to a format that CF can read (DivX, WMV, etc.) and play them as videos rather than DVDs. Menus, etc. would be lost. I think I'll just carry the DVDs with me.

It will play ISO files or folders if you mount them first with daemon tools

    auto mount

Couldn't there be a way to have CF automount the ISO of the DVD when you select it from the list.

I thought about using PowerDVD as an external app and loading DVDs onto my carputer, but then I thought I would have limited space and would not need the extras and 5.1 audio tracks and stuff so I think I'll just rip any DVDs I want to mp4 or some other format and save some space. Not like I'll need the full 720x480 resolution on my 7" Xenarc anyway...

Automounting with daemon tools would just require that David called a the command line mount command for Daemon Tools and that he umount before mounting a new one. A general umount feature would also be nice :-)

Remember to clear the safe mode flag on daemon tools, else it pops up with an annoying question every time.
