    radio?

i know this question has been asked before, but the threads are old and never had a solid answer. i was looking to get fm radio for the car(don't care about tv) and was just wondering what solutions had worked well for you guys inside of CF and didnt require much modding. i know silabs makes an fm stick that some ppl have used, and it requires an external antenna to be soldered on. does anyone have a relatively easy, working fm solution?

The solution I have use with great result is RadioXtreme. In order to take full advantage of the car existing antenna, buy a car antenna extension and finish it off with an F to 1/8" connector from radio shack. It might not look like much but if you connect it correctly you will be pleased with the reception.

I've been trying to get a good reception for some time from RadioXtreme but actually i couldn't succeed. Using the stock radio of my car, the result is perfect but when switched to radioxtreme, even the best station is not clear in sound. I'm using the same connection as lfilomeno. So i've given up last month and ordered a HQCT. The result is awesome. It's as good as my stock radio, but the Centrafuse driver is under development and furthermore it stopped working two days ago.

I can say that the most tricky part of this carpc business is the receptions of tv and radio. We must not have been struggling with the technologies which all the world has been using for nearly a decade. It's a shame when even a cellphone radio has perfect reception and a radio device with car antenna connected does not.

So HQCT is the way to go my friend, although it's too expensive.

I personally use the RadioXtreme and plan to use the HQCT once we get all the bugs worked out...

How easy is the HQCT to hook up? Does your stock car antenna plug into it? if not, how does it get so good of reception?

You should search the forums a bit...
Here's the primary discussion thread on the HQCT, with pics and developer info: HQCT Module (new thread following HU RDS/RDBS)
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Yes it works. I've orderer a Silabs USB Radio from USA 3 days ago and picked up yesterday. Immediately i tried it and the reception and the sound quality are excellent when connected to stock antenna. The connection is done like in this link:

USB FM RDS Solution with sofware

that Bj done. The original software works excellent except i couldn't see RDS data on it. When used with the radiator plugin created by a member who posted it on the same thread as far as i remember, radiator works too. This meant CF would run it too. So i opened CF and, yes, it works as expected, but there is a minor issue. You hear two instances of the same sound, one following other after like 2 sec. I couldn't kill one of them, actually the latter as i think it's listened from the virtual sound port created by the silabs while radiator runs it and played back again buffered by CF. So either CF has to directly use Radiator and not buffer it, or buffer it but mute radiator. I'm loudly thinking now as i don't know the exact mechanism between radiator, CF and USB radio devices which don't have real output channels.

David, would you comment on that? Silabs is really good USB FM card with excellent price/performance ratio. It's sound quality is almost in par with HQCT most of the times. It would be great to use it with CF. It also has source code, so a direct interface of Silabs to CF can be developed without using Radiator.
