Will the laptop have a com port?
I am going to use a soon to be ordered Dell laptop for my carputer, to be installed in BMW M3 e46. I have read some great posts about setting up computer BIOS to use Wake on Ring to get a laptop to bootup on start of the car ignition. For example: Shutdown/Startup Controller for laptop
I am electronically challenged and have no idea how to "apply 5 Volts to pin 9 (RI) of the 9 Pin Com Port" etc. Is there anyone interested in building me the component that connects to the laptop with instructions for computer setup and car installation? Feel free to email me at: m3man@covad.net
Will the laptop have a com port?
Do you mean a RS-232 (serial) port? My current specs on the laptop do not have one but I have not finished so I can make sure it has one.
Make sure it has one. The pin you need to connect to is a pin in the serial port. Not trying to crap on anyone that wants to make some money, but it's really simple once you understand it so try and get help first. Then pay someone if you still don't feel comfortable.Originally Posted by missle
BTW Laidback really is a huge help. With his advice I got my shutdown/startup working flawlessly.
Ok, I have selected a Dell model that has the serial port. I also understand that now I need a part that sends a low voltage signal to a certain pin of the serial port. That is what wakes up the laptop. I would have no clue where to begin making this part. Thus the reason for offering someone a few bucks to make it for me. I also figure there are some simple BIOS changes. I am going to use an installer for my LCD and a few other pieces I am installing. I guess I could ask them if they know how to make it. Thanks Laidback and falconey. If anyone cares to make me one with some instructions I would welcome a price at m3man@covad.net.
