Have you used it, and if so how well is it recognized in window or mac?
Yes I have used it I had no touble loading the software on my home computer running win98 . I hooked up a ide dvd player to the USB to IDE device.

did you just leave the dvd drive out in the open connected to the converter? Do you think that it could work with a cd-rw?

DESCRIPTION:
The Model UD-100 adapts IDE, EIDE or ATAPI devices to USB. The electronics is built into the connector housing, which contains a standard 40-pin "hard drive" connector. Software drivers for Windows 98, 98SE, ME and 2000 are supplied. Drivers for Macintosh OS 8.6 or higher are also included.
TYPICAL APPLICATIONS:
You can add most any type of portable storage to your PC or Mac using the UD-100. It is compatible with IDE, EIDE and ATAPI devices, including Hard Disk Drives, CDROM drives, CD-RW drives, DVD-ROM drives and LS-120 drives. A CDROM, included, contains all necessary software drivers.
