    Exclamation Cheap DC/DC PSU wanted

What's the cheapest and smallest DC/DC psu that I can buy / make from a kit? I looked through Sproggy's site, but gathering all the parts would be too difficult for me. I can handle some moderate soldering though.

Useless post #5 for the day:
Well, that doesn't really exsist.. Its either find the parts for teh sproggy, buy a pre made sproggy, or buy another premade PSU..

Please don't be an ***. It would behoove the veteran members of this board to be a bit more tactful with nubs to your realm like me. After all, you're trying to build a community, not a grab-***-tic "31337" club. I simply don't have the resources to hunt down all of these parts or the luxury money to throw at my hobby.

Your response makes my post not useless at all. You answered my question to a certain degree:

    - Sproggys (by your measure) are the cheapest. Go buy a pre-made sproggy.

So who here makes Sproggy's and how much do you want for one?

What are your requirements, AT or ATX, what mother board and CPU have you got? TFT display or character LCD? With a bit of info along these lines I could point you in the right direction on the design side of things.

PS. What's the music on your site?
And you say people actually pay money for M$ Windows?

    Talking

woah- somebody checked out my page...

I'm trying to put together the following:

    for my '89 VW Jetta

PC Chips (amptron) 589LMR AT/ATX board, onboard sound, video, LAN
    AMD k6/2 300Mhz, 32/64mb RAM (1/2 chips)
    DC/DC PSU
    Seiko 4x40 backlit LCD
    IrMan? (maybe)
    PS/2 keypad
    Western Digital 6gb drive.

I'm somewhat flexible about size constraints considering that I'm not terribly wealthy, but if I could fit it all in a small enclosure I'd be a happy guy. 80w PSU ought to be plenty, right?

ps- I believe the song order on my page is:
    VAST - Free
Reel Big Fish - Somebody Hates Me
    Poe - Haunted

    Rob asked some good questions....

If you are looking for an AT DC-DC PSU then the arise 865v is nice.

There are many homebrew ATX PSU's as well as a couple of manufactured one's.

You can find the links for these PSU's at http://www.mp3car.com/usersites/mp3carlinks/ under the Power Supply section.

Mastero sells the Sproggy version complete or just the PCB boards for it. Check out his page, Mastero's Cyber Shop. Jeff Mucha has begun to sell his design on ebay from time to time for more info check this thread for more info and a link to his homepage describing it.

Good luck and don't be put off by Skinnyboy. All boards have people that polute them. Overall everyone here is nice and helpful.

Ohh and by the way....nice site. From your musical tastes, I would suggest the band Dispatch. They are just getting big (airplay in Chicago so far). Check em out at Dispatchmusic.com.

Basically from the sound of your spec you can get any with simple voltages regulators for most of it.

For the 12v a LM7812 should be fine along with a capacitor.

For the 5v volts there is a simular chip with a higher current rating called a LM323 which uses basically the same circuit.

The -12 volts is a bit harder and uses a MAX775 chip, and a few support components. You can use the same LM7812 as for the 12 out.

Unless you use the serial port (ie for the IRman) then you won't need -5v. However if you do need it you can use a LM7905 voltage regulator and capacitor.

The above circuit is for a LM7912, but it is the same as the circuit for the LM7905.

It might be worth adding capacitors to the inputs of these circuits say 470uf to 1000uf. Any if it's a bit of noise, try adding 0.1uf capacitors on the outputs.

You should be able to get all the parts from
    Farnell or National.

    I hope this helps.

    Rob

PS. Sll the circuit designs are off my site and are my own work, so if anyone wants to nick them, it's considered poliete to ask first, and then credit me
