IMO this is a much better detector. I read a review and it said this had some newer band detection that the valentine didn't that the us was going to start using.

the new v1 has the pop detector, but i think probably the best bang for you buck would be the bell rx65! Same as the escort 8500 but with voice and it's cheaper!!!

As far the V1 vs the Escort, in both my and several friends experience, the V1 is definately the better detector. In controlled tests like those found in magazines and many websites, the Escort often receives higher marks than the V1. What we've found tho is that under actual driving conditions, the V1 has been much more effective, and sensed the radar and least as quickly as the escort, and in most cases much sooner. We've even tested both in the same car together at the same time with the same results, the V1 warning us up to 5 seconds or even more before the escort. The most noticible differences tended to occur when the cop is sitting just over the top of a hill, which of course one of the most valuable times to have a radar detector as theres no way to spot the cop in time no matter how carefully you watch the road ahead

I wouldn't get a v1 from ebay. They usually have either broken or old units. So you'd have to fix/repair the unit

I'd only get one if they have the serial number posted, so that you can go to the website and verify that it's a newer model -- or at least not a REALLY old model. The first V1s still work well, but they're pretty sucky in the Ka side and they want like $200+ to upgrade them (plus whatever you pay for it on ebay)... might as well buy it new from the manufacturer...

As far as what works better, it's a toss up. I have a V1 and an Escort 8500 and neither one has done me wrong in the past. I'd like a laser shifter for my Escort (something I don't think you can do with a V1) but I don't have buckets of cash to throw away on stuff like that...
