    For sale update . . .

    I had a pretty good response for these, but that was it for my first batch. If the people that bought from me seem happy I will most likely sell again;

    So for now . . . Closed
If you want me to email you when I start selling again, shoot me a PM.

Alright, for those of you that have tried to install other OS's how did it go? did you do an "upgrade" via a usb/pcmcia CD-rom drive? or did you load the contentes of the install disk to the drive? mine certainally wont boot from CD-rom or USB (wish it did that would be great)

I've read about 50 of the 70 pages from the other thread about these from a few years ago, but i ask you how are you doing it and how's it working for you? personally i'd love to get a light linux install on one of mine (it would interface w/ my home automation system MUCH better)

maybe theres a bios flash avalible?! who knows ... any one contacted King?
and does anyone have the original manual (preferably in PDF) we could circulate?

ok just trying to get the most out of this!

I'm in the same boat, cant seem to get win2k of winXP installed, they all hang at the "setup is starting windows" screen. I've done the memory upgrade successfully and 98 is running pretty swiftly but i want to run NTFS, so assuming i can find some old copies of Windows NT thats my next step. I'll report back with my findings as well as some good clear photos of the unit, as I haven't found very many.

I have still yet to try it but I've got a copy of win2k on my jumpdrive that I will be loading in in at some point. But my wife smashed my laptop so I've got no way to back up before I start screwing with it. I know 2k has worked for people and I've had people tell me they had xp installed. . ..check those threads I linked to because some of those people still use mp3car and might remember how they did it even if they didn't do a walkthough in the thread itself.

Update: I've finally got XP installed, however like others have mentioned the touch screen doesnt seem to want to function correctly. XP doesnt like to give up IRQ 12 to the touchscreen and lots of BSOD's result. I also could not get any of the ps/2 ports to function in XP, I had to use a USB keyboard mouse combo to finally get things working.

My next plan is to try win2k however I was having some winsrv.dll problems in my earlier installation attempts.

I'm not sure what this is, but I found this file on my server:
    http://graphicscheck.com/kioskBU/MT%....0%20Win32.zip
If i remember, this was supposed to be xp drivers for the touch screen but I donno.

let us know if it is or if you find a way to get the touch screen working.

Be sure to check the text file in that same folder for info too.

    Linux!

Ok, well i've been working on this for a while, i own two of these units, i gave one to my brother as a project and i kept one as a project. My brother quickly upgraded windows to 2000 and xp, i took mine and decided i'd have much more flexibility with linux, here is a quick over view of how i did it.

    • took the hard drive out and put it in my desktop
    • made an image with PartImage (PartImage is a Linux utility much like Norton Ghost for windows), this way if i messed up i could quickly restore the image and have a working 98 install back on the kiosk
    • put the Kiosk hard drive in my T20 Thinkpad laptop, b/c the hardware was the closest (this is not necessary, the hard drive can be in any "x86" PC)
    • installed gentoo with the genkernel (So that it will automatically detect the hardware on boot). gentoo install handbook
    • after the install was finished i moved the hard drive back into the Kiosk and booted into linux [screen shots to follow]

NOTE: genkernel has a slower boot time than using a custom kernel, if i find that this is a problem i will compile a custom kernel later, i dont think i will do this since i am not using this in my car and will not need a faster boot time

I have not gotten the touchscreen working yet, that is a project for today/tomorrow.

currently the touch sceen just boots the Terminal, there is no X (gui) but i will fix that soon enough.
