Wanted: Carputer Installer in Austin, TX

I have been lurking around in these forums for a couple of years and finally decided to register today! I will be buying a 2005 or 2006 Honda Pilot in the next few weeks and am interested in putting a computer in it. I am very comfortable building, configuring and programming computers but my mechanical aptitude for making custom dash fittings and tearing apart (actually I am pretty good at tearing apart, just not at putting back together) a car is next to non-existent. Ideally, I would like to work with a professional installer who could put everything into my car and make it look nice after I built the PC and interface.

So after all that long-winded intro, does anyone have any recommendations for a good person or place to work with in the Austin area?

    thanks,
    Murray

Thanks for the offer. I would prefer someone a little closer, but just to get a rough idea, how long would you need the car and what is a ballpark figure for installation?

    thanks,
    Murray

P.S. Any significance to your name? I worked for AMD here in Austin for about 10 years before they closed our fab in 2001.

i can do it but im in houston...

if you can convince him.. my brother lives in san marcus and he is more than capable of doing it as well...

i would say 8 hours should be plenty of time to make sure you can get it all installed... that is without fabbing a screen mount/bezel

Do it yourself. Buy an OEM replacement console (see below) that has the DVD/SAT Nav option, mount your touchscreen, run your cables, flick the power switch and you are done. I suck at that kind of stuff but I had my computer up and running in a couple of hours. YOU CAN DO IT!!! I live in/near Austin for help.

I am not sure if I am reading this correctly, but for the -05 Pilot, the Navi bezel is $15. That is cheap!!! Mine for the Altima was $180, but it came with extra parts such as the board that controls the functions of the OEM nav system. See link below and good luck!

Jeffreyd, Thanks for the encouragement and the link to the bezel. Are you thinking that it is part #12? I might be able to live with $14.43 even if that is 37% over the list price.

If you don't mind, as I get closer to really doing this, I may come back to you with some more questions and advice. I really am terrible at putting things back together and giving them a professional appearance so I am a little leary of tearing apart my new (to me) car.

    thanks again,
    Murray

I think it is #12. I think it is worth buying it for that cheap. Let me know how you make out and let me know if you have any questions.

I'll keep you informed. I am probably a couple of months away from doing anything...I already have a few other home projects I need to finish up before starting on the car!

    thanks,
    Murray
