If you are gung-ho about building a circuit I would like you to take a look at the circuit diagram in this post. I know the chip only costs $11.

There are actually better IC's manufactured by the same company, STM Electronics, which include stereo decoders (the TDA 7513T is such a chip).

What I, and others, are looking for is a cheap way of getting FM and AM radio into our car's PC but still getting good reception.

The idea is that when the iPaq "speaks" directions the circuit senses it, triggers the switch which mutes the music, I hear the navigation directions (throught he phonbe connection) then it switches back to playing music.

Ideally it should have two 3.5mm jacks so I have a split output to the head unit (I know this could be split beforehand but thought it would be neater this way).

yup, this is pretty simple...unfortunately you may lose the first few letters of the first word, as the circuit will have a (very small) reaction time. I don't really see a way around this.

I would be interested in RCA/VGA auto switcher.

post a schematic or full description of what you're talking about, and I'd be happy to

A device simillar to Cheeze box. You would have two inputs. A VGA input connected to your computer and a RCA input connected to your backup camera. You would also have one VGA output going to your monitor. In default mode, the device is on VGA in-VGA out. When it detects signal on the RCA input, it automatically switches to RCA in-VGA out. When RCA signal is turned off, it goes back to VGA in-VGA out again. Device needs to operate with either 12v or 5v power as these are readily available from an in-car PSU.

you need a VGA scaler for this, and that is way out of my league as far as design goes.

I could adapt an existing cheesebox to autosense the input, but could not build one from scratch.
