I realize that some GPS pucks may not update the data stream any more frequently than 1/second, but that doesn't mean the timing signal is beng received only 1/second.
As I have read it, the carrier wave is in the Ghz, but the data is only sampled at 1Hz. It's funny because I am studying for an exam right now on signal processing and this sort of thing! Sort of like the 802.11 standards. The carrier wave is at 2.4Ghz but the amount of data transfered is not equal between 802.11g and 802.11b and 802.11a and 802.11n because the g/b/a/n standards are only how fast the adapter polls the carrier wave for its data.

Basically the GPS signal is an analog signal, but must be sampled to become a digital signal obviously. Regularly available GPS units such as this one, only interpret the GPS data, once a second. There are 5Hz units available I believe.

And even if the bottleneck occured at the serial interface between PC and GPS puck, all GPS software is 1Hz based. The serial stream coming from USB pucks, are 1Hz based (Except for the more expensive 5Hz units). So even if the GPS signal itself can be polled an infinite number of times a second, the data you get regardless has a 1Hz error.

Gotcha. I thought it was just my crappy Earthmate that was slow in reporting. :-)

I imagine that in the infancy of consumer GPS, a 1Hz sampling rate seemed perfectly adequate, especially when the application was for a handheld device that wasn't capable of moving at 60+mph. Especially pre-2000, when the signal was still degraded anyway.

Thanks for the info, and good luck with your test. I'm currently studying for USMLE (that'd be medical boards/licensing exams), so I feel your pain, even if I don't envy your position.

i got my pharos bundled with street & trips also and normal amount of satts ig is between 9 & 12. i have also purchased a few 303 353's from mp3 and there no where near the quality of the pharos unit, if 353's are to be better than to pharos there must be a second version cause i do not see where it is a better unit. yes you can see small movement like lane changes i put mine on dashboard and it fine so don't think i'll be putting it outside.
    Underconstruction for 2007 !!!!

I got my Woot yesterday and the receiver is the Pharos GPS-500 Sirf III unit. I get 6-7 satellites with it hooked to my desktop in the house.

Can you take a pic of it? Is it the same blue rectangular-ish puck that came with all the 2006 bundles? Because I have been told my receiver is not SirfIII, and I thought it was the pharos-360 unit. But if it is the pharos-500, then that would explain the goodness!

Well mine works fine, I was just wondering...

If you close the GPS pane, by default the extra gps stuff shows up in really teeny tiny text. It will tell you the # of sat, and lat/lon/altitude.

Oh well, mine works better than most, so I will take it at face value and not question the almighty "how"!
