So I've been messing with mine off and on for many months. It will work fine for a while, then just go stupid. I think it is loosing its configuration settings.
Today it refused to shut down the PC when I turned off the key. Didn't matter how many times I went on/off with the key, it completely ignored it. If I get out the notebook and reprogram the device to factory defaults, it will work for a while again.
Then it hangs, yet again. That means I can't trust it to shut down my PC...
So is that typical or to I have a bad device?

Well, it has done it twice more. When I plug in the notebook and check the settings, the shutdown timer is set to 4 minutes, 30s, instead of 6s like I prefer. The deadman timeout is also set high- I don't need it set to 72 hours, I want it shutdown in 2-3 hours if there is some kind of a failure to power off normally.
I'm running V1.8.3 firmware, and I could not find any newer firmware on their site. In fact, they don't even list the P2140 in the firmware update section: http://www.carnetix.com/firmware/FirwareMatrix.htm
Does anyone have a newer firmware?
I'm wondering if I could write-protect the settings somehow...

Been there, done that… my P 2140 has never worked the way it was supposed to, and now it's completely dead after very little use. Contacted MP3.com for technical support who are very detailed email, got back a question asking for clarification which I answered, and they never got back to me. So I decided to deal with the fact that it wouldn't shut down the computer properly and just do everything manually, but now doesn't work at all after having sat for a couple of months of not even being used. Is installed in a motorhome with a very stable battery bank and is in the situation where it won't be used every day. So after having spent all that money on the power supply, the USB 5V add-on, and the Mac mini cable, I've got nothing…
I am bummed out! I will never buy another product from Carnetix, and I'm on the fence about buying anything else from MP3.com.
I got used to it randomly reprogramming itself, but last week it died on me. Haven't bothered to plug in the USB yet to see if I can still talk to it, but I know that it won't power up.
