DashCommand does work with some other sensors, but it would be difficult to get speed and RPM at the same time.

If you used a GPS-enabled tablet, you could pull the GPS calculated speed. Also, I know Zeitronix makes some RPM sensors that are compatible with DashCommand. However, I believe these sensors are serial-only, and won't be able to be connected to an Android tablet. Only the full Windows version will support the Zeitronix stuff, but it won't have GPS data.

For Android and iPad tablets, you are only able to use PLX sensors.

My plan is to use a carPC with Windows embedded 7 standard, SSD, TFT as a gauge replacement.
I do not need any GPS, media player or other software - this should be only used as digital gauges.

If I understand you right, with the full windows version and sensors from PLX and/or Zeitronix it is possible !?

Yes, the full Windows version it would be possible to get a lot of information except vehicle speed. Here is a user of ours that used the Zeitronix sensors to get engine RPM, oil temp, AFR, and some other data in a custom dashboard mounted in the vehicle using DashCommand (username audisnapr):

So I have been searching around and have almost decided convert my dash to be fully digital. The only thing holding me back is the awful boot time for Windows 7. My plan is to buy a mac mini (small, powerful, and clean), put windows 7 on it, and hook that up to a 7" Lilliput touch screen. But i just get around the long start up time. Any advice or ways to avoid this?

Linux, my plan is to run ubuntu and use a stand-by mode. My centreno 1.73Ghz laptop will cold boot Ubuntu in ~20 sec, un-optimized. So my apu powered car pc should be wicked fast.

I haven't ever measured the boot times of various OS's, but I would think that TinyWin7 on an SSD would boot pretty fast. Also, Windows 8 is supposed to have a new driver caching system that is supposed to make it boot extremely fast, thats another option you could look into if you're willing to wait a little while.

The problem with those options is that TinyWin7 may be so stripped that it will not support dash command and the other stuff I would want to run and DashCommand does not support windows 8 either (unless you guys update it of course). I guess my best option is to go the tablet route.

any update as to if there is a sensor that could let you get vehicle speed? I plan on replacing the guages of a SS chevelle and would need speed, fuel and RPM.

I have some great pictures of an SS Chevelle with the system in it. The entire gauge cluster is replaced with 2 7in screens, a custom machined bezel and then a touchscreen in the dash. Looks awesome.
