Thread: Google POI Search

I didn't have enough time to mess with it again and I didnt click on any of the results to add to navi. But from clicking POI > Pizza > The results were quick and accurate, i clicked on a local spot and it showed up 1.2 miles away and all that good stuff. So it seems it works fine, hopefully I can mess with it more tomorrow.

I know about the free inet thing and I use it but more often then not in my area there is no connections as I am driving so the POI's are kind of pointless at that point. So I take it there is no way of saving your results for offline use?

You're asking the wrong person. Froalskiner would have to answer that. I just wanted to give you a hard time.

Well, short answer no... This is the way it works essentially...

1. Enter in a search term
2. Mod does a search on Google for search term near current coordinates
3. Results are pulled down and saved to a html file
4. mod scans through saved html file and pulls the individual fields out of each result
5. mod puts each result into an item in the list and assigns the Name and coordinates

Each time you put in a new search term it overwrites the downloaded file.

In the next version I'll use an xml feed...or other local source to store the results to make it work when not connected to the network.

For now it's an online only mod.

Thanks again for the mod, it works great. And that would be such a big help, is it even possible to have the results saved and added to the SD database of POI as discussed in Chuck's thread from two years ago (or have we not worked out that feature yet?)

froalskiner, sounds good I will wait for the next version. I am just happy to see some type of working poi's for now

So it sounds like it's working as designed for now...

For the users that used this prior to it not working, did it ever return more than 10 results?

Did some more testing.....this is an impressive little beastie. I was just sitting in the driveway testing everything out after moving the computer stuff around. On a wim, clicked on the google poi, and selected home depot. It automatically started up the navigation, and within seconds, I had 10 of the closest Home Depots around! I thought it had to tag zip codes (like weather does), but guess it just needs long and lat.

Again.....well done! (Oh yeah, and well done to the original author. I had never actually checked it before)

Yeah, I can't find who originally wrote it either...Sounds like it's working as intended...
