I posted the Volume Auto Hide and Nav Zoom Auto Hide digitalmods on the wiki page.
Basically, you just install them and they will monitor for a volume or navzoom button push (the ones that show the slide overlay on the left and right sides). After 10 seconds, the mods will hide those slide overlays. There is some way to get it slightly out of whack (right now I am just toggling - if I could get the existing state of an overlay I could make it even better) but I've not hardly any issues and I know that I have enjoyed not having to close the overlays manually.
