    Streetdeck Dev. Environment Question

Just wondering whether the streetdeck development environment is tied down to the specific hardware it is registered to (the way the streetdeck front end is). I haven't used the development environment at all yet but I intend to later this week to write my first digital mod. Wondering if I can write this mod from the comfort of my home instead of inside my car though

Nope. You can use it on whatever you want...No development restrictions.

Yeah, in fact, you don't even have to be a registered user. The dev environment works all the time...

I've been playing with Developer mode for a few days and although it will work all the time you really can't test the changes you've made without exiting developer mode and moving in to a normal mode. There are just too many things that don't work when in Developer mode such as sounds, camerals etc.. If you want to test your changes and your outside of the 30 day demo you have to take the changes to your running system.

I see two ways around this.

    1) Allow all of the functions to work when in developer mode. Come on now just how many people are going to try and run SD in developer mode in a live system, i.e., a car? I don't think any will, the cost of the program is small compaired to the pain in trying to use the SD in developer mode in a live system. You can also not allow the SD to go in to full screen mode, if it even can, while in developer mode so it's totally useless in a car.

    2) Get rid of the 30 day limit but keep the timeout. The 15 minute timeout is short enough to be a royal PIA in trying to use SD in a live enviroment. Ok, maybe someone will accept the pain of restarting SD every 15 minutes so after 30 days remove the full screen ability or take the timeout to 5 or 10 minutes. At least when developing you have enough time to fully test changes you've made.

I'm sure there are other ways to do this but of the two I've listed and if I had to pick I'd take option one.

    As usual, IMHO

The multiple limitations are there not really because we think we need to limit it in multiple ways cause people would keep using it if there was just one limitation, but because it makes it much easier to hack if there was only one. The dev mode is pretty easy to hack to make it force it to go fullscreen so we also have to kill the audio and video.

StreetDeck was already hacked when we first released it so we had to enhance the security and add multiple timeouts to it.

Finally, if you have already purchased StreetDeck and you really are developing on your home machine and find you need to run it in non-developer mode to test it too, first prove it by uploading a complete skin or DigitalMod to the appropriate place on mp3car.com wiki. Then forward your mp3car reciept for StreetDeck including your order id from the e-mail address you registered under and a link to the stuff you developed to [email protected] and I will generate you an extra license for development use on your home machine.

During the initial build working on the target system works well but once it's ready to be installed in the car working on ones home system is much easier to do. Your solution to the problem is totally fair

    Thanks, John

Oh, one more question. Does audio and the like work in a licensed copy of SD or is audio always killed in developer mode?

Audio is always killed in developer mode. Developer mode should run exactly the same regardless if it is registered or not.

What audio are you talking about?
I listen to mp3 in developer mode all the time when I work on skinning.

You have to click on a couple of the right on screen buttons and then it unlocks Played Media slider so it doesn't reset to 0 all the time.
