^ What I ended up doing is getting a potentiometer and running it inline to the RCA from the computer to my amp and installing the potentiometer as a volume knob next to the screen. No more Windows 8 volume issues

(PS: I use Windows 8 as a full frontend and, other than volume issues, find it works fairly well for my own uses)

Clockwork, what about a floating volume control for windows 8 like the one you have for DriveLine with the home and keyboard apps? Do you think It is possible to create a volume slider that will stick over the Metro Apps? There is something for windows xp and 7 here : http://codesector.com

I will have to play with Metro a bit. It would be easy to just add a volume control to the floating Home/Keyboard buttons. But I'm not sure how Metro apps interact with the desktop versus normal desktop apps. It might be possible to add the volume controls to that weird slide-out on the right-hand side of the Metro UI.

You need to think of Metro as an emulator, almost completely cutoff from the desktop environment. No desktop application can directly manipulate a Metro app, and no Metro app can directly communicate or interact with a desktop app. You could write a Metro app that communicated with a service or app running in the desktop using TCP/IP or possibly something in the WCF stack, but it's not going to be terribly efficient. Not saying it can't be done, but I don't think most of the "normal" ways you'd go about it are going to be available.

    Sounds like a fun adventure.

I feel like I've been neglecting my CarPC duties here for the last couple of weeks. I'll be getting back into it soon.

Have you noticed that in Windows 8 they took away all the games under programs, the simple fun things like Spider Solitaire that you would play while your wife runs into Walgreens?

Now you have to go to the microsoft store and download the app. And guess what... They inserted advertisements... Just like in free Android and iPhone games! Bah! Commercials! Even the weather app has adds.
Also I have to set my 800x480 resolution 7" screen to 1280x768 as a minimum in order to use any Metro apps on my Car PC, or I get the minimum resolution error.

What sucks is I cannot get the Metro games to load into Driveline's "Shortcuts" page. I am going to try and harvest all my Windows 7 games and install them into Windows 8, since they can run at 800x480 without balking...and no commercials!

OK, so what am I getting at here?

Yes, I want to be able to use Metro Apps, but...

They need to be written for us 800x480 resolution guys too!
They need to remove all the adds and commercials!
They need to be able to be installed without having to go through "Big Brother's" microsoft store.
What we really need is a Rooted, Jailbroken, Cracked Metro that has a settings screen where you can define the allowable critera... "Use Unknown Sorces" for app install, "Define Minimum Resolution Allowed", "Kill Advertisements", etc.

    yes. a jailbroken windows 8 ! I like that :-)
I have an 8 inch screen and i too have to set it to the metro app minimum resolution ! I managed to make the screen usable by changing text size to 150% and changing other setting in the display setting screen. BUT THE MISSING VOLUME BUTTON in the metro apps is a real show stopper ! why in hell did they design it that way :-( Even on a tablet if you're using a video or audio player and you touch the screen you get volume control !!!!! Apple and Google do it this way ! why in hell didn't they design it to do the same !!!!
