Question Data from the car engine

Is it possible to capture data from the engine, for example speed, rpm, oil pressure, etc? And then interface it with our carputers?

Yes, using either OBD or OBD-II depending on the age of your car.

What would you want to do with that data?

I would want to display it on my lcd screen in my car, maybe log some info...mostly just display. Anyone have any way of interfacing the obd 2 connector with a parralell or serial port?

You need a protocol converter that connects to serial port of your computer.

The one I have is from this guy Dan Harrison, http://www.ghg.net/dharrison/obdscan.html I won't recommend buying that guys product. He is an ******* and never replied to any of my emails or phone calls regarding problems with his buggy software.

I wrote my own interface software in visual basic because his was so bad and I was looking to export those variables on something like and LCD screen so I could keep an eye on things.

Hey thanks for the infomation. I was planning on writing software that would turn the data into a nice grapical format. As well as logging. How do you find out if your car is OBD or OBD-II?

If your car is a 1996 or newer it uses OBD-II. OBD-I was used in cars before 1996, I don't know how far it goes back.

In my little program I'm trying to find a way to calculate real time miles per gallon. I understand it's some relationship between engine load and the mass airflow senor. But I have no idea the formula used to calculate it. Can anyone offer insight?

Does anyone know of a cheap source for the interface to the computer. It would have to be OBD-II generic. Thanks
