Help Please - Choosing a USB OBD II Device

What software are you guys using with the ELM chip? I bought one from obd2allinone.com and the programs they sent with it are just OK. I don't mind paying a little $$$ for decent software. I'm just looking for basic diagnostics and data logging.

Have a look at ProScan 5.1. You might find a demo version to try before you buy. You can have live sensor graphs, grids, oxygen sensor tests, freeze frame data, diagnostic trouble codes, send custom formatted requests to obd. Nice and easy to use. Works on Vista and XP.

I got the one from the china seller 1 month ago and it works very good as reported. To me is an ELM 327. Comes with OBD cable and USB cable. The software that comes with it sucks. However it took 2 weeks to arrive so if you order it be patient.
I am using it with Road Runner and the OBD plugin made by user ELCAMINO. It works nice and you can clear alarms and all that. There's a stand alone version of that plugin.
I have it installed in my Toyota Highlander 2002.

Get one from obdpros, it has double buffering to help keep up with the dataflow.

Do these OBD scanners need driver when installed on the windows XP system or do they just load up withput drivers? The program that I will be using is called ScanTool.net.

Hi cybergeek,

Depends on the Elm327 interface. If you are connecting to a serial port directly then no driver required. However if you use a USB serial adapter to provide a virtual port or you use an Elm327 USB scantool, then a driver is required. In both cases the driver should be supplied with the equipment.

Don't buy that scan tool. It's a knock off and does not use a genuine Elm327 chip.

The biggest red flag is the cost. A genuine Elm327 chip costs around $20 by itself (even when purchased in bulk).

The OBDPro interfaces will work with all ELM compatible programs and now we provide speeds of upto 1.2 Mbits on the USB interfaces.

I recently purchased the elm327 from an ebay site for $34 w/shipping (but-it-now cost). As far as double buffering??? - don't

see any with real-time updates. Interfacing to XP OS is simple and used scantool.net free version for code reading and real-time diagnostics. Read earlier that the ProScan 5.1 software is good, but interested if anyone else some ideas on the best software under $100???
