    Elmscan 5 USB Problem ?

hello i recently just purchased an elmscan 5 usb scantool from mp3car.com, when the package came i immediatly noticed that there was a rattle inside the case and that the sides of the case looked like it had pry marks on it like it had been opened before. i gave the rattle noise the benefit of the doubt and thought maybe it was like that for some reason because i am totally unfamiliar with the scantool. so i go to the car with my laptop and everything is installed and i followed the directions on the manual exactly and when i installed it i get nothing but a few blinks of the power light. after reading and re reading the directions un hooking and re hooking the scantool up at least a dozen times i finally gave up and suspected the rattling noise to be the problem so after debating for about an hour whether to send it back and delay my carputer project that much longer i figured that it already looked lilke it had been opened before so what did i have to lose.so upon opening the scantool i immediatly noticed that there was an ic floating around in side and that was what was making the rattling noise. so again after about an hour of debating whether to plug it in and searching the web for a schematic i found nothing on the web that helped me so i decided that i had a 50 50 chance of connecting it right so i looked on the board and on the ic for an indication of the orientation but found nothing so i tried to use as much common sense as i have and pushed it into the hole. i know that the ic didnt just fall out of the slot it was in because it was pretty tight to push back in. so when i connected it to my car it immediatly worked and gave me info, but after about the fourth or fifth time using it it started to randomly disconnect and now i can only use it at random times when ever it feels like connecting.

sorry that was so long i just had to tell the story, but my question is (1)does anyone know of where to get a schematic or some info on the orientation of the chip? (2) should i just return it and get another one? (3) is it normal for these scantools to come this way?

thank you guys for taking the time to read this and i hope someone has some insight into this for me.

    Bill,

It is certainly not normal for the IC to be rattling inside. You can either talk to MP3Car, and get it exchanged, or ship it to ScanTool.net.

Was the IC labeled "ELM327"? It has a "half-moon" on one end, as does the IC socket on the board. If you say it worked after you plugged it in, then it's in the right way.

What software are you using it with? On what type of vehicle (year/make/model)?

If you select only RPM, would it still "randomly disconnect"?

thank you for responding so fast. yes it does say ELM 327 on it and i see the moons on the ic and the socket they are both on the same side. i did contact mp3car and they suggested that i post a thread here so thats what i did. the software that i am using is the one that came with it.. scantool for windows. however i cant get it to work in centrafuse if i can get it to work long enough today on the way to work i will turn it on and make sure it is only rpms that is being monitored and see what happens. the vehicle that i am using it on is a 2001 ford explorer sport

    wbixby,

Is Centrafuse configured for the correct baud rate? The default for ElmScan 5 is 38400.

It should work, because the Centrafuse folks used ElmScan 5 for development.

i guess its ok i left it on the whole time to work and back and the most it would do is freeze for just a couple of seconds and then pick back up. i figured out the centrafuse problem it wasnt my baud rate that was correct at 38400 what it actually was, was the little buttons on the side of the settings screen the automatically connect and the ignore pid buttons. once i changed those it started right up. while i have you let me just ask another quick question. am i supposed to unhook the scantool when i get out of the car or is it ok to leave it plugged into the car because i notice that when i turn off the car the power light is still on on the tool. i just didnt know if it will turn off after a while like a capacitor has to drain the same way the mobo light on a pc will stay on for a while. i was just wondering because i would hate for my battery to be dead because i left it plugged in.

by the way thank you for all your help i couldnt have gotten this solved without you,
    bill
