    Devices

So I was looking around in this thread:

    Free Obd-ii Software

and around post #50 or so, they start mentioning that the ELMScan5 is slow. Right now, the FE I use mentions it is only tested to work with the ELMScan5 but in the future, I'm pretty sure I'll be running seperate software for OBD. Is the ELMScan5 a "bad" device? Are there better to be had? Is it more of a preference thing? I notice that OBDPros have less expensive devices but are they better? I know next to nothing about OBD and don't want to purchase a sub par device. Oh, I should mention that I MUST have a USB connection as I'm using a UMPC as a car PC and it doesn't have a Serial port. I guess I'm just looking for some purchasing guidance and info on what makes one device better/worse/different than another.

Pretty much all ELM devices will perform the same. Obdpros is NOT an ELM327 chip, but infact a custom written chip which is ELM327 compatible. That's the one I purchased and I'm very happy with it, but it doesn't seem to perform any better or worse than a real elm327 I've tried, so that's not really a concern with it.

Beware of ebay sellers claiming to sell ELM327 devices for cheap (less than $30) as they are cheap knockoffs, and it's hit or miss as to if it'll work for you.

    malcom2073,

Not sure if you have the new 1.3 firmware but in my biased opinion the upgradable firmware capabilities and higher throughput on CAN bus are key differentiators for us.

If you do not have the 1.3 firmware PM me and I will work out a way to get you the upgrade.

    Thanks

Our interfaces support in system programming so we can provide upgrades via a simple software download.

    Thanks
