    iPhone app beta testers needed

    Hi All,

I have created a project called FuzzyLuke (http://fuzzyluke.com), which lets you use your iPhone to see and save all of your OBD-2 data (Modes $01, $03 and $04 currently, with the rest on the way soon). The application, FUZZYCar, is currently in review with Apple and should be available shortly, but in the interim I am trying to find up to 50 beta testers.

To use the application, you will need a Kiwi WiFi OBD-2 scanner from PLX Devices (http://plxkiwi.com/kiwiwifi/hardware.html). I'd love to get some early feedback on the application and the website backend. You can see a demo of the website features showing all of my car's OBD-2 data at:

    Mike's Murano Dashboard

Email, DM or carrier pigeon me if you are interested (see my profile for contact info). I would be most grateful for any comments, criticisms or suggestions you all might have. In addition, all beta testers will get lifetime free upgrades of the application.

    Thanks,
    Mike Gile

Sorry, don't have a WiFi OBD. Otherwise I'd be happy to test it for you. I love the dashboard. Does it operate in real time?

No worries. Check back in with me in a month or so, I'm trying to get a bunch of Kiwi WiFi's specifically to lend out to testers.

The iPhone app requests from the ECU all supported Mode $01 PIDs and then continuously loops requesting the latest data from each PID and storing it to disk. Unfortunately, the iPhone itself will not allow outbound network connections when connected to a WiFi Ad Hoc network, since it thinks the WiFi should be providing network connectivity regardless of the type of connection. You can see this in action by trying to launch the Google Maps app on your iPhone when connected to any Ad Hoc network, which will result in a network error. So, while you will never lose any data, there is an extra step to "sync" the data by hitting the button on the main page, which will upload all of the scan tool responses that have been cached on the iPhone whenever you disconnect from the Kiwi WiFi.

The FUZZYLUKE website dashboard itself is fully capable of supporting real-time uploads, and in fact there is a developer API, which accepts JSON data. An example might be to POST data to:

    https://fuzzyluke.com/mygarage/cars/<car_id>/responses/

which will shove all the uploaded scan tool responses into that cars' account. So if you uploaded a Mode $03 response that had several trouble codes, you would see that as soon as you hit refresh in the web browser. And this will also send out an email notification to anybody you choose with the details of all the trouble codes pulled (i.e. code + description).

I hope to add other mobile platforms before the end of the year, like Android and Blackberry. I'm also going to flesh out the developer API documentation so developers can start enabling other applications to upload OBD-2 data, not just iPhone.

I wonder if you ran backgrounder and used PDAnet whether you would have the same problem with a one way connection?

    Hi HoSS,

I sent you a PM with my contact info. I'd love to have you as a beta tester. The FUZZYCar v1.0 is available in the AppStore right now, and v1.1 is in review to be released this week hopefully. And v1.2 is ready to submit to Apple once v1.1 is released, so if you'd like to try the bleeding edge, I can get you setup with a v1.2 build immediately.

All I need to do the install is your iPhone/iPodTouch Unique Device Identifier (UDID), which you can retrieve and email to me using this free application from the AppStore called "Ad Hoc Helper", located at:

    http://itunes.com/apps/adhochelper

This will pull your UDID and put it into an email message that you can send directly to me. My email should be in the PM I sent to you. Once I get your UDID, I can sign the v1.2 build for your iPhone and will send you a file that you can install onto your phone via iTunes.

    -Mike
