    Messure gas usage with Phidgets?

Hi. I bought the phidgets board a while back and I'm now happy with it showing the car amp usage and the outdoor and indoor temperature But I really would like it to show how much gas the car is using. I guess it's not that hard, just find a sensor and put it right before or after the gas filter or something, but where do I find this sensor (and what is it called?)?

You're looking for a flow meter, you need one that is rated to be used for gasoline/flammable liquids. If you find one under $100, let me know. I've been having troubles finding one as well.

RevFE - Super fast, modular frontend. Most powerful skinning engine in existence. Strong enough for an i7 made for a fitpc.
Just a shame I can't justify a carpc to use it on anymore.

How come it have to be used for flammable liquids? Volume is volume nomather the fluid, right? And how come it's so expencive?

Right, volume is volume... but if you get a magnetic reed switch flow meter, there's a chance of spark. You also need one for high pressures, fuel systems run 30-80PSI. No clue why they're so expensive, but I've yet to be able to find a cheap one besides the low pressure kind used for PC water cooling systems.

But I can't believe we are the only ones who are looking for a flow meter to measure gas usage? I would say that to be able to calculate fuel usage would be more pracitcal than amp and voltage measurement, right?

Myth busters used a fuel meter to calculate exact instant fuel usage... email them and ask where they got it?

It looked like a real product made for measuring fuel flow rate... I'm doing some more in depth searching and will let you know what I find.

If the engine is fuel injected you need two of these sensors. One in the supply line and one in the return line. The fuel usage is the difference between the two flow-meters.

Which makes it all more important to find cheap sensors.
