    Elmelectronics ELM327 1.4 Announced

Was just browsing their site and saw this on the front page:

As they say on the relevant page though,
Version 1.3a of the ELM327 is still available for purchase, at a lower price. This IC was great value for the money before, and now offers incredible value. It has more features than most people can use, so you will not go wrong if you pass over the new v1.4 and buy this one instead.

    Hi,

    The chip is official released.
    Datasheet available at http://www.elmelectronics.com/obdic.html

The 1.4 version cost $32.50 and the 1.3a version is still available at $19

I've not not yet read all datasheet but 1.4 allows manual initialization and other stuff...

IIRC the announcement was made on March 1.

OBDLink r2.0 will have sleep functionality that is more flexible and robust (as-implemented, ELM327 will go to sleep when you tell it, but then wake up just as your CarPC shuts down). We started working the 2.0 last year, and are planning to formally unveil it on April 1st. Around the same time we will bring the AT command set up to date, and issue a firmware update.

    Cool stuff, Vitaliy

Yeah, it was released on march 1, but since they don't have an RSS feed, I only see their updates whenever I visit their webpage. I hadn't seen mention of the new chip posted here, so ... I posted !

    Hi

I'm writing a software (called ELM Emulator) which allows to do what you mention. In fact I emulate an ELM connected at an ECU.. I used it to test my software (some screen shots at http://sites.google.com/site/outilsobdfacileen/home)

As you said really useful to do not have to test on vehicule (which not necessary support all modes)

Right now, the emulator permit only mode 1, 3 and 4... If you're interested contact me.

I suppose 'our version, when we have one, will be a zillion times better' is normal sales stuff, but I don't see anything fundementally wrong with their scheme - certainly no obvious 'power down' problem like you suggest.

Since they just released and you are still working on it, I suppose I could make a lot of noise about you both being copy cats. But that would be silly. It's pretty common practice in modern accessory electronics in the cars, so it's not as if I came up with the original idea.

The problem with ELM327's power down scheme, is that the timeout between issuing a command and the chip going to sleep, is fixed at 2 seconds. To wake it up, you issue a command. Now, normally, when the PC shuts down you see "garbage" on the UART. So,

    - Software tells ELM327 to go to sleep
    - ELM327 goes to sleep 2 seconds later
    - PC shuts down
    - ELM327 sees garbage on the line, and wakes up

How do I know this? Because we ran into this problem a couple of months ago while testing.

Your smirk is noted, though it is unwarranted. We've "had it" for a long time, the prototypes are out and are being tested by the software vendors.

OBDlink questions, advice? Want the best.

    Hello!
I think I have settled on buying the OBDlnk. I just have a few questions for the forum members.
First, the AutoEnginuity supports "Bi-directional support. You have the ability to initiate system and component tests. And "Mode 6 support. If a system test fails, now you can see the results from the failing component; not just the system. Our Mode 6 data is fully translated so you don't have to waste hours looking the scale and definitions."

Does the OBDlink do the same?

I have a read a few posts regarding the availability of the ELM327 1.4 chip. Will OBDlink be releasing a new version of the unit with the new chip? I think I read April 1st release? If so I would rather wait for the new version.

Now regarding the OBDpros, is it the same unit for all intent and purposes? Besides the price being lower on it, is there a benefit or drawback to either?

I'm looking for the best. I think the OBDlink is the best bet, but I would really like feedback from forum members on this one.

    Thanks!
