Need advice and specific questions before purchase.

Hi Everyone I no longer have access to the Scan tool at the dealer I used to work at so now I need to do some things on my truck and wanted to know what the best OBDII interface will be the best for my specific requirments...

Vehicle 2005 Dodge Ram 3500 CTD. What I am wondering with these readers is can I see things such as the transmission temp, preasure solenoid status etc within any of the software? I am assuming that real time fuel rail preasure, boost and all that is availabel as well?

Another question is do any of these allow you to make changes to the user programmable features such as horn chirp, headlamp delay, etc?

I am sorry I have done some searching however not sure I have found these specifics for my vehicle and want to make sure whatever I buy it is what is going to do the job right the first time. Also I do not need or want bluetooth USB is fine for me.

Thanks so much for any help or advice you can provide...

wow really nobody has any input on this? I thought for sure at least one of the OBD suppliers would give me input that their product can do something for this?

I suspect most of your questions are software related, not hardware, as far as OBD is concerned. What is specific to your truck may even have to be programmed by you.

I suppose most of the differences hardware wise are if they're fast enough, or if they're compatible with older cars, or if they turn itself off if the computer is off. I'm looking into buying a cheap $19.00 bluetooth OBD interface just to see how it compares.

As for user settings change, like headlamp delay, etc. Forget it. I'd like to have that too, but you'd need to hack the CAN BUS network for that to work. Most of that is done by Europeans on BMWs, Audis and Mercedes. I have yet to see that kind of thing for domestics, or even Toyota and Nissan.

FWIW, we found that these cheap ELM327 Bluetooth units randomly gobble up bytes and there is a report of one actually catching fire.

For a short time we've been selling a rebadged version of ELM327 Bluetooth as a cheaper alternative through our webstore, putting them through the same automated tests we use to test OBDLink. However, we eventually discovered that all of them, even "pass" units once in a while would "swallow" part of a response or receive commands incorrectly, which causes intermittent connection errors. So, we pulled them from the webstore.

thanks for the replies as for hacking the CAN bus mine is purely OBDII 2006 is when they went to CAN. I do think it is all software that I need to work on but not sure of which one to go with.
