    Question OBD-II Mode Questions?

    Hi,

I am trying to talk to my car using an ELM327 with some terminal software.
I can get the basic AT commands to work.

However what I can't work out is how to put the unit into OBD mode so I can start
    taking readings from the car.

Can anybody give some pointers or a simple example so I can follow.

    Thanks,

    Ward

What car is it? Make, model, model year, engine (petrol, diesel).
In which part of the world do you live? Usa, Europe, Japan?

These units don't have different modes of operation as you describe. Plug it in, you're good to go.

If you've seen stuff by using AT commands, the next thing to try is "0100". Mode 1, PID 0, is your baseline "car, tell me what you can do". If you see numbers, good. If not... less good.

I suggest reading the elm327 datasheet from elmelectronics.com. Three fourths of what I know about using OBDII was gleaned from that.

    Hi,

Thanks for the responses - the car I have is a:

"Australian" Holden 2003 VY Calais V6

I tried the codes as suggested 0100, however I kept getting the error

    BUS INIT: ...ERROR

So what I am doing wrong. What protocol does this model support?

    Thanks,

    Ward

I think Australian cars have to comply from 2005 on?
Car is probably not compliant with anything.
You would need a Tech-2 to communicate to it.
